The Princess of Wales has taken to Instagram to share a touching tribute to a young photographer, who passed away aged just 17.

Liz Hatton attended Windsor Castle and met Kate, alongside her husband Prince William, during an emotional visit last month.

A photo of the royal warmly embracing Hatton was shared to the Wales’ X (formerly Twitter) account, alongside a second image of Hatton’s wider family with the prince and princess.

“A pleasure to meet with Liz at Windsor today,” the post caption read at the time. “A talented young photographer whose creativity and strength has inspired us both. Thank you for sharing your photos and story with us. W&C.”

Hatton was originally invited to photograph William’s investitures at the palace after he heard about her love of the art at a previous engagement for London Air Ambulance.

However, Hatton’s family have since confirmed that their talented daughter passed away in the early hours of yesterday morning, prompting a moving response from Kate.

“We are so sorry to hear that Liz Hatton has sadly passed away,” she wrote. “It was an honour to have met such a brave and humble young woman. Our thoughts and prayers are with Liz’s parents Vicky and Aaron and her brother Mateo at this unimaginably difficult time.”

Kate recently completed chemotherapy treatment, following a cancer diagnosis earlier this year. In an emotional video statement shared on her social media channels in September this year, the royal said: “The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant, and we’ve had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.”

With her treatment now completed, Kate said she plans on “undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months”.

The princess has since begun slowly returning to work, and has been seen more frequently in the public eye.
