A strong street style look is all about the oh so delicate balance between careful, conscious styling and lived-in simplicity. Over the years, this sartorial balancing act is one that Katie Holmes, a certified street style icon, has well and truly mastered. Although Holmes often reaches for chic, elevated basics to form the base of her looks, she is also never afraid to add a whimsical, unexpected twist. Just before Christmas, for instance, Holmes sported a brown and red look, pairing a red pageboy hat with extra baggy pants. Later that week, she wore the same hat and pants with a long, stylish black coat. Then there was the time she paired simple jeans with her festive red velvet Mary Janes. Or the time she added an unexpected touch to a simple black coat with a shiny waist belt.

Holmes' latest look is yet another masterclass in blending tried and tested sartorial classics with surprising, even contrasting, elements. On Boxing Day, the actress was spotted on one of her New York City walks sporting the coziest brown wool coat. She wrapped herself up in the oversized coat as though it were a blanket, pairing it with a simple gray wool sweater, long baggy jeans, black leather loafers, and a black bag. She completed her off-duty look with a messy bun and oversized brown sunglasses.

The real star of the look, however, came in the unexpected form of her trusty tote bag. In addition to her black handbag, Holmes carried around her extra essentials in what appeared to be a Hello Kitty Baggu bag—because of course she did. Did the vibrant green, blue, and red Baggu bag "go" with her chic, quiet luxury look? Strictly speaking, no it did not. But then again, maybe it really was the perfect, practical, lived-in finishing touch to her look.

Holmes was reportedly on route to the Barrymore Theater where she is currently starring as Mrs. Webb in a revival of Thornton Wilder's Our Town alongside Jim Parsons and Zoey Deutch. Holmes and the rest of the cast had a short break from performances over the holidays.

"I love being in New York and and actually it's really exciting to be in a Broadway show during the holidays," Holmes recently told InStyle during an Ann Taylor event. "To experience different audiences and people traveling to come into the city—there's just an excitement to them, so I'm really looking forward to that. We had some great audiences around Thanksgiving and to share the holidays with strangers is wonderful. Christmas in New York really is always magical, isn't it? I love it."
