Katie Holmes's Teeny Side Braid Is the Perfect Solution for Winter Hat Hair

Winter is magical—fluffy snow, cozy sweaters, cradling a cup of peppermint mocha in your mittened hands—but it can also be a major annoyance to your beauty routine. Do the words “hat hair” mean anything to you? They certainly don't to Katie Holmes, whose latest street-style look is the perfect way to conquer static and frizz when the temperatures drop.

As I write this from my home in Minnesota, it's currently snowing a lot. Thankfully Holmes is here to save me from a bad hat hair day with her teeny side braid, which was tucked just so underneath a simple black beanie. The actor wore her dark hair pulled to one side and braided down, stopping the braid with a few inches to spare and leaving the rest of her hair loose. The beanie (probably a cushy cashmere!) was pulled over most of her hair and part of her forehead, and just the tiniest tendril of hair was left out of the braid to give it Holmes's signature effortless cool. You know when she takes the hat off there will be exactly zero static or frizz—just a go-anywhere, do-anything braid.

Holmes could honestly teach a masterclass in hat hairstyling. Given that the actor lives in New York City and walks everywhere, winter gear is a total must, and she incorporates it into her looks with ease. Remember how perfectly she tucked her curtain bangs underneath a beanie? She's also pretty loyal to the side braid when she's not rocking her usual loose waves. It's the end of the year, we're all ready to put our “out of office” on, and Holmes's hairstyling routine is perfect for these restful, unbothered weeks ahead. Plus, I've got some snow shoveling and a dog walk on the agenda, so there's no better time for a braid-and-beanie combo.
