Katy Perry’s backless butterfly top is held on with one tiny chain
Okay, KatyCats – we're not telling you anything you don't already know here but just in case you somehow missed it, Katy Perry’s new album 143 is officially out! The musician celebrated by hopping on Instagram to show off the vinyl, which brings us to what we're really here to discuss: her outfit for the occasion. Specifically, a backless top that my early aughts self would have absolutely died for.
Enter: a giant butterfly masquerading as a shirt. No seriously, the top is essentially a giant multicoloured resin butterfly with cut-outs in the wings, attached to the singer's torso with a chain that was fastened around her back. We can't comment on how structurally sound the design is, but it looks hella cute.
Katy paired the butterfly top with low-rise jeans that featured further chain detailing as the side seams were ripped, held in place by a chain threading through loops to create a lace-up effect.
While Katy's previous ensembles to promote 143, her seventh studio album, have featured a sci-fi chic aesthetic – we're talking about the iridescent rubber rings she wore as a bikini or the huge metal robot alien legs she wore to make the new music announcement – butterflies are actually a running theme for the record. Colourful drone butterflies could be seen fluttering around the singer during her performance at the 2024 VMAs, for which she received the Video Vanguard Award and arrived on the red carpet wearing a shredded bra top and skirt and a whole bottle of body oil.
Safe to say it's been quite a journey, congrats to Katy on the release of 143!
