Keeping up — with the weather, health and the weeds — is an ongoing battle

The year has slipped by faster than I could have imagined back in December.

The back-to-school stuff already fills the stores, making me depressed for those kids who may feel like school just ended. Already I have received two free calendars in the mail from fund-raising organizations, and I’m just halfway through some of the ones I got in 2023 for this year.

Seems like no one can relax and let things unwind. But I guess we retired people are the only ones who can do that. In fact, the slower things go, the better for us. I mean, who can keep up?

Certainly not me. As I would have predicted earlier in the year, I am way behind on the weeds in my garden, which basically is my entire yard. That isn’t all bad though.

I have found that some weeds actually have very nice looking flowers. And catching up gives me something to do. If only the heat would let me work outside for more than an hour per day.

If only my plants and flowers had the vitality and perseverance of the weeds. I guess it is because weeds have to be in a hurry to grow as quickly as possible in order to reproduce before someone like me tries to kill them.

If only I was healthy and hearty. If only seems to be in charge here. Story of my life.

The other day I spent time pulling all the weeds from the patch of dirt on the street side of the front sidewalk. I discovered a nice stand of marigolds. They are one flower not unlike weeds. They shoot up and spread.

So, today when I looked at the marigolds, weeds were already sprouting around them. I know I pulled every weed I saw so where did these come from? Weed seed is insidious. It never rests. It never gives up.

Unlike me. I long to give up. But if for nothing else than city regulations limiting weeds I have to keep going. I will battle them until my strength runs out or the atmosphere goes up in flames, which doesn’t seem that preposterous these days.
