Kelly Ripa Reveals a "Brutal" Wardrobe Team Said She Should Be "Smaller" Only 9 Days After Giving Birth
Kelly Ripa recently recalled the time she was body-shamed upon returning to work on the set of All My Children just nine days (!!) after giving birth to her oldest son, Michael, in 1997.
“I didn’t recognize my body. I was on the soap and I had to go back to work nine days after [giving birth]—nine days!” the talk show host shared during the December 6, 2023 episode of her “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast, which featured guest Hilarie Burton. “The wardrobe people were like, ‘We thought you’d be smaller by now,’” she added.
During the episode, Kelly also recalled knowing that she wasn’t “going to be smaller anytime soon” as she navigated returning to work so quickly postpartum and admitted that she had “gained 68 pounds” during her pregnancy with her son Michael, who is now 26: “I was like, ‘Well, I’m not going to be smaller anytime soon. I don’t know much but here’s what I do know. This looks like it’s going to be here for a while. I’m not in any rush.'”
Me to this wardrobe crew when I find out their first and last names:
A quick refresher for ya: Kelly played the role of Hayley Vaughan on All My Children from 1990 to 2002, which is how she met her now-husband, Mark Consuelos. The longtime couple hit it off on the set of the ABC soap opera, and went on to elope after just a few months in 1996. Kelly's first two children, Michael and Lola, 22, were born while she was still on the show; however, she had her third, a son named Joaquin who is now 20 years old, after she departed the series.
During her recent podcast episode, Kelly also opened up about how giving birth can be a very isolating experience and admitted that, despite Mark's parents moving in to help with their firstborn, she still “felt like I was on an island.” “I think all women who have given birth will tell you that they feel they are on an island. I don’t care what the support system is,” she continued.
TBH, Kelly sharing her honest anecdotes on motherhood just made me a stan for life. 🥺❤️
