Khaite Plays With Dualities for Spring 2024

Khaite has risen to the top of the list of most sought-after brands, through its growth has been slow and steady. Catherine Holstein founded the label in 2016, after years working at companies ranging from Vera Wang to the Gap. Katie Holmes catapulted its cashmere bra and cardigan set to viral infamy in 2019; three years later, it took home the CFDA Award for American Womenswear Designer of the Year.

Of course, a lot happened before, between and after those milestones. But to a degree, the brand's ascendance has happened quietly and discreetly, much like the refined pieces in which it traffics. Though Khaite releases multiple collections a year, it gravitates toward the same few timeless concepts on the runway and in its lookbooks season after season: billowy blouses made from a sexily gauzy material, flowing camisole dresses, soft knits in flattering cuts, slick leather outerwear that draws sharp lines with its silhouette, lots of denim. The label is adept at creating the most luxurious versions of those everyday items that build a wardrobe, infused with a sportswear sensibility, meant to be worn for a long time. So, how does one bring newness and excitement to a collection when the proposition is something meant to be essential and forever?

For Spring 2024, Khaite focuses on visual contrasts, "blurring distinctions of surface and structure, organic and synthetic, shadow and glow," per the show notes. The collection debuted at the Park Avenue Armory, which was left completely empty save for the seating — two sets of two rows, facing each other across an otherwise sparse (and incredibly dark) space; a spotlight followed each model as they made their way down the runway, which emphasized the sheerness of certain fabrics by revealing the shadow of the body underneath.

This juxtaposition extended to the styling as well, which played with proportion: oversized, balloon-sleeved sheer blouses with leather short-shorts; boning at the waist cinching dresses and creating drop waists; strong-shouldered jackets with fringed skirts or otherwise showing off the legs. The color palette sticks to neutrals, with a dash of "flame red."
