King Abdullah and Queen Rania's Wedding Compared to Prince Hussein and Rajwa Al Saif's Wedding
All eyes were on Jordan this week as Crown Prince Hussein married Rajwa Al Saif, now Princess Rajwa, in a spectacular wedding that featured royalty from all around the world (and so many tiaras!). The wedding, hosted by Hussein's parents King Abdullah II and Queen Rania, called back to their own royal wedding nearly 30 years ago to the day.
On June 10, 1993, Abdullah—then Prince Abdullah bin Al-Hussein—married Rania Al-Yassin. Rania, then 22, was born in Kuwait to Palestinian parents, and had met Abdullah at a dinner party just six months earlier. At the time of their wedding, Abdullah was not expected to inherit the throne. Now the King and Queen of Jordan, Rania and Abdullah have four children: Prince Hussein, Princess Iman, Princess Salma, and Prince Hashem. Princess Iman got married earlier this year, and Prince Hussein, as Crown Prince and heir to the throne, had a wedding that was similar to that of his parents.
Here, see how the two weddings compare:
Rania's wedding dress was by British designer Bruce Oldfeld. It featured short sleeves and gold embellishments. Rajwa chose Elie Saab for her wedding gown, which had an asymmetrical neckline. Notably, Rania did not wear a tiara to her wedding, but a dramatic headband. Rajwa, on the other hand, did wear a brand new tiara.
Hussein's suit explicitly channelled his father's wedding suit. Per the Royal Hashmeite Court, "The Crown Prince will don a suit that draws inspiration from the distinguished design worn by His Majesty King Abdullah II on his wedding day. Embodying the rich legacy of the Hashemites, the suit's sleeves pay homage to the timeless style displayed by both Their Majesties King Abdullah II and King Abdullah I."
Both couples rode in a motorcade through the streets of Amman following a wedding ceremony at Zahran Palace. Hussein and Rajwa traveled in the "Sheer Rover," a 1984 Range Rover that was especially customized for the visit of the late Queen Elizabeth to Jordan, whereas Abdullah and Rania were in a more classic convertible.
And one last side-by-side of newlyweds Rania and Abdullah in 1993, and 30 years later, at their son's wedding. For the ceremony, Queen Rania wore a black and gold Dior gown, and Abdullah wore a classic suit.
