King Charles Remembers Queen Elizabeth Ahead of the One Year Anniversary of Her Death
To mark the one year anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's passing, King Charles has penned a moving tribute to his mother.
"In marking the first anniversary of Her late Majesty’s death and my Accession, we recall with great affection her long life, devoted service and all she meant to so many of us," Charles wrote, a message which was shared along with a new photo of Queen Elizabeth. "I am deeply grateful, too, for the love and support that has been shown to my wife and myself during this year as we do our utmost to be of service to you all."

The portrait of Queen Elizabeth was taken by Cecil Beaton at Buckingham Palace in October 1968. According to Buckingham Palace, "It was chosen by His Majesty The King to mark the anniversary." The portrait has not been released before today, though it was shown at the National Portrait Gallery between November 1968 and March 1969 during a retrospective of Beaton's work.
Upon Queen Elizabeth's death on September 8, 2022, Charles immediately ascended to the throne, taking on the regnal name of King Charles III. In his first speech as monarch, he addressed the nation, saying, "Queen Elizabeth was a life well lived; a promise with destiny kept and she is mourned most deeply in her passing. That promise of lifelong service I renew to you all today."
Just as Queen Elizabeth marked the anniversary of her accession, and her father's passing, in private, so, too, will Charles. He will spend the day at Balmoral Castle, where Queen Elizabeth passed away last year.
