The countdown is on for King Charles’ III Coronation on May 6, 2023.

The former Prince of Wales was pronounced King at the First Proclamation on September 10, 2022 but he is yet to be crowned at an official coronation. Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation ceremony took place months after she became Monarch too, on June 1953, over a year after her father’s death on February 6, 1952.

In the lead up to the historic occasion, several plans will already have been set in motion, from the sending out of invites and organisation of security, to the Coronation concert (scheduled to take place at Windsor Castle the day after the Coronation), and the tailoring of formal attire for the royal family.

One question many royal fans are now asking is whether there will be a Coronation medal on the day?

Here’s everything we know about the King's Coronation medal:

When Queen Elizabeth II was crowned Queen a commemorative medal was issued to mark the occasion. However, this wasn’t just a medal for the Queen to keep, rather it was made for more than 120,000 individuals, from royals and government officials to members of the Armed Forces and the police.

However, it’s unknown whether there will be a commemorative medal issued for the King’s coronation this spring. Time Out reports that King Charles III’s medal ‘will be issued following the coronation’, so perhaps we will have to wait that bit longer to see the rumoured design.

That said, the Armed Forces charity AWARD recently announced it has issued its own commemorative King’s Coronation Medal to mark the occasion.

‘Available to all veterans who served the crown and those who are currently serving members of the Armed Forces, Emergency Services personnel (paid, retained or voluntary), Prison Service, Police Community Support Officers, holders of the Victoria Cross and George Cross and members of the Royal Household,’ a message about the medal reads on the organisation’s website.

'Next of kin and direct descendants may also apply. The miniature medal and all other items are available without restriction.'

The medal costs £59.50 to purchase and customers can request a free engraving on the edge of the medal when placing orders prior to March 31, 2023.

The coronation’s timing is significant this year, given it’s the first time the ceremony will take place on a weekend since 1902, when Edward VII was crowned King. As a result, a bank holiday will take place on Monday May 8 2023.

While specific timings are yet to be announced for the Coronation, if we were to go by the Queen’s ceremony, we should expect to see the event start around 11.15am and last nearly three hours.
