Kmart catalogue includes kids with disabilities

Notice anything different about this catalogue photo? Yep, that’s a boy in a walking frame.

While some may have simply flipped by without noticing, a number of Australians took to the Kmart Australia Facebook page to congratulate the company on including children with disabilities in their Easter catalogue.

“I would like to congratulate Kmart for having a young boy with a walking frame as a model it [sic] their Easter catalogue,” wrote one commenter. “A BIG step forward to disability education & recognition. I’d like to see more of it. Well done KMART.”

“Your catalogue needs to be recognized as a true game changer when it comes to diversity,” another chimed in.

In addition to the boy in the walking frame, a boy with Down syndrome was also featured.

In response, the company said in an interview with Buzzfeed, “this is not a new focus for Kmart Australia, but an extension of our broader and very important focus on improving diversity within our business and truly representing our team, customers and communities that we operate in and are part of.”

Along the same thread, Target Australia featured a girl with arm crutches in a Halloween catalogue earlier this year to great praise. In addition, Tommy Hilfiger recently launched a clothing line designed specifically for kids with disabilities.
