Kristen Stewart Explains Why She Would’ve “Immediately” Dumped Edward Cullen

If Kristen Stewart were in Bella Swan's shoes, Bella and Edward's love story would have abruptly ended after Twilight book one. According to the actor, who famously played the star-crossed Bella Swan opposite Robert Pattinson's tortured vampire Edward Cullen, she would have given him the boot right away.

As noted by Entertainment Weekly, Kristen Stewart appeared on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast recently while promoting her new movie Love Lies Bleeding, and the subject of Bella and Edward eventually came up. “Let’s talk about Bella for a second. Do we not like her in retrospect?” asked host Amanda Hirsch.

Stewart still clearly has a fondness for Bella, as was evident by her response. “Do we not like her? Hey, you better be careful. I don’t know if you can tell who you’re talking to right now,” she joked.

Hirsch clarified that she disliked Bella's submissiveness and was not a fan of the lengths she would go to receive Edward's love, calling the character “a little desperate." Stewart defended Bella, stating the she was actually less of a fan of Edward — or rather, his obsessive nature. “Well, yeah, but he was trying to sort of control whether or not she made choices for herself," she explained, then delivered an all-time kicker. "I would have broken up with him immediately.”

Apparently, Stewart didn't care for Edward's reluctance to turn Bella into a vampire, a transformation Bella pushed for so the two could be together forever. “I mean if I was like, ‘Hey, I want to try that,’ and he was like, ‘No, this is just for me,’ I would be like, ‘Well, this is also just for me: My whole life. Without you,’” Stewart said. (Like the queer feminist icon she is.)

Of course, that's not quiiiiite how Bella and Edward's story worked out; the fictional couple did eventually get married and welcome a (notoriously frightening) half-human, half-vampire baby, as well as fight the Volturi and stay together in immortality, but despite their happily ever after, Stewart maintains that Edward's overbearing behavior in his relationship with Bella was a huge red flag. “I get the sort of protection thing, but you gotta let a girl make her own choices,” she explained.

As noted by People, during her conversation with Hirsch, Stewart also addressed the ever-viral “Bella, where have you been, loca?” moment in New Moon. “Yeah, what in the world… I wonder if that was in the script. What is that?” she said. “Is that in the book? Maybe it’s in the book.” Just in case you were wondering, it's not in the book — and neither was the infamous “Hold on tight, spider monkey” line. Ah, the beauty of book-to-movie adaptations. Can you even imagine what kind of impromptu lines we'll get from the TV series reboot?
