Kylie Jenner Cosigned the Return of the Bubble Skirt and I Don’t Hate It

If there was one Y2K trend I thought would never see the light of day again, it’s probably the bubble skirt. Kylie Jenner just proved me wrong.
On June 8, the 26-year-old business mogul shared a series of vacation snaps in a low-rise white mini skirt featuring a true bubble hemline, which she paired with a matching white bralette tied behind her back with a bow. “Wishin i was still hereee ☀️,” she captioned the pics, tagging her fashion brand, Khy.
While the bubble hem was popularized in the ’80s, it took on new life in 2005 thanks to red carpet moments from the likes of Paris Hilton, Mischa Barton, and other Y2K It girls. And although bubble skirts were certainly popular among Hollister shoppers around that time, a midlength bubble dress was truly the moment—and I’m not just saying that because I wore a purple bubble dress to prom.
Nearly 20 years later, what’s old is new again. Vogue even gave millennials fair warning in May, writing that “bubble girl style is here.” The cloudlike silhouette has been cropping up all over runways and in cool, niche influencer feeds for months, meaning it was only a matter of time before it was embraced more widely.
Is it any wonder the ’90s and early aughts tween mall staple Limited Too just hard-launched its return to form? Of course, there is something more sophisticated about the 2024 approach to the bubble trend. Kylie Jenner, for one, leaned in to the lightness of the skirt by pairing it with a breezy straw hat and hardly anything else, save two vintage-inspired gold watches on one wrist. You can see the rest of her pics here.
The verdict: I don’t hate it. In fact, I’ve already started planning some ’fits in my head. If only I could get ahold of my old prom dress.…
