Lady Gaga channels old Hollywood glamour at the Venice Film Festival
Lady Gaga is ready for her close up.
The 32-year-old music superstar has taken the Venice Film Festival by storm to promote her film, “A Star is Born,” alongside actor Bradley Cooper. The remake of the 1937 film marks Gaga’s first leading role on the big-screen as well as Cooper’s directorial debut.
The pair arrived hand-in-hand to the film’s photocall. Lady Gaga ditched her over-the-top fashion looks in favour of an understated white A-line dress by Azzedine Alaïa.

The star saved her flair for the dramatics until that night — when she arrived on the red carpet for the film’s world premiere in a pink feathered confection by Valentino.
Despite already winning a Golden Globe for her work on “American Horror Story: Hotel,” producers were initially skeptical to cast Gaga as a talented but insecure musician named Ally, who falls in love with a down-on-his luck rockstar.
For her screen-test, Cooper had Gaga remove all her makeup, a move that helped the star channel her character.

“It put me right in the place I needed to be, because when my character talks about how ugly she feels — that was real,” Gaga recently told the Los Angeles Times. “I’m so insecure. I like to preach, but I don’t always practice what I preach.”
The six-time Grammy Award-winning artist revealed that unlike her character who’s hesitant to break into the music industry, she was determined to be seen and heard.
“What’s different from Ally than me is that when I wanted to become a singer, I hit the concrete running,” Gaga said. “I was dragging my piano from dive bar to dive bar to play music. I was calling people, faking being my own manager to get gigs. I really believed in myself that I could do this and that I wasn’t going to stop until I made it. …The truth is, when we meet Ally, she’s given up on herself. And that’s very different from me. I just wasn’t overwhelmed by the odds. The truth is, if we were not sitting here today and I hadn’t sold as many records as I have, I’d still be in a bar somewhere playing the piano and singing. It’s just who I want to be.”
After its world premiere in Venice, Gaga and Cooper will head directly to the Toronto International Film Festival which opens on Sept. 6.
