For many celebrities, particularly the A-listers, false rumours surrounding their personal and professional lives are unfortunately often part and parcel of the job. From invasive lies spread about an individual's relationship and sex life to their family and hobbies, misinformation surrounding celebrities over the years has unfortunately been nothing short of brutal.

One celebrity who has fallen victim to this has been Lady Gaga. For the 38-year-old popstar and actor, who is behind a long list of top charting songs including 'Poker Face', 'Bad Romance' and her latest single 'Die With A Smile' featuring Bruno Mars, during much of her early and rising career she faced outrageous allegations from fans seeking to uncover the 'truth' about her gender.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Gaga was continuously hounded by blogs, publications and social media which claimed that she was a man. The star has now explained why she never felt compelled to address the rumours.

While appearing on a recent episode of Netflix's What's Next? The Future With Bill Gates, Gaga opened up to Gates about what she had to endure.

'When I was in my early 20s there was a rumour that I was a man,' said Gaga. 'I went all over the world. I travelled for tours and for promoting my records and almost every interview I sat in they said — there was this imagery on the internet that had been doctored — they'd say, "There’s rumours that you’re a man. What do you have to say about that?"

'The reason why I didn’t answer the question is because I didn’t feel like a victim with that lie, and I thought: 'What about a kid who is being accused of that who would think that a public figure like me would feel shame?'

Despite the rumours being rife for a good decade, Gaga chose to never address the rumours, until now. 'I’ve been in situations where fixing a rumour was not in the best interest of the well-being of other people,' she continued. 'In that case, I tried to be thought provoking and disruptive in another way. I tried to use the misinformation to create another disruptive point,' she stated.

Gaga's interview on Gates' series comes shortly before the release of her upcoming film Joker: Folie à Deux, were she is set to play Harley Quinn, as well as the release of her new single from her seventh studio album, both of which will come out in October.
