From the metaphors in a victory speech to the colour of a tie, rest assured that no small yet meaningful detail is ever just a fluke when it comes to the world of politics. So it made sense why the outfit worn by the new prime minister Keir Starmer’s wife wasn’t pulled from the wardrobe in a ‘made do’ fashion, rather would’ve been a significant choice for Lady Victoria Starmer.

On Friday, the NHS occupational therapist was seen standing alongside her husband at Downing Street for his first official speech as PM following his appointment by King Charles earlier in the morning.

For the historic occasion, Lady Starmer wore a split-shoulder Contrast Stitch Midi dress from the British fashion brand ME+EM, which retails at £275. The brand, founded by Clare Hornby, was created to foster ‘intelligent style for intelligent women’, according to its website.

The poppy red dress, made from a crease-resistant fabric, was made in a poppy red, reflective of the Labour party’s colours to celebrate their landmark victory.

With an elasticated waistline and pockets, the dress was a fitting choice for a woman whose words, actions and fashion choices will come under the microscope in the years to come.

The choice of dress was particularly fitting given ME+EM is a brand which is often worn by Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment and has stepped back from official royal duties in recent months during her ongoing recovery.

In recent years, the royal has worn pieces from the brand to the Chelsea Flower Show, a visit to Copenhagen and an unforgettable pink midi dress (also worn by her mother, Carole Middleton) to meet a little girl named Mila, who she promised she’d wear pink if and when they met during a visit to Scotland.
