Reality star Lala Kent defends gifting 1-year-old daughter a $1,120 Louis Vuitton bag

Lala Kent is making sure that her daughter is celebrating her birthday in style.

Earlier this week, the "Vanderpump Rules" star took to Instagram stories to wish her 1-year-old daughter Ocean a happy birthday, and show off the luxurious bag she gifted the toddler.

In a photo shared by Kent, the toddler holds a $1,120 CAD ($880 USD) Louis Vuitton Mini Pochette that features a gold chain and the brand's famous monogram motif in contrasting leather.

In anticipation of criticism from her fans, Kent defended her daughter's birthday gift, and revealed to fans the family tradition behind the pricey purchase.

“I know a lot of you are going to think I’m nuts, but hear me out,” she captioned her story. “I really have a love for bags. My grandmother passed a lot of hers onto me and I will one day pass them on to O. For my baby girl’s first birthday, I wanted to get her her first bag. So here she is with it, decked in Give Them Lala Baby."

Despite her explanation, some fans still sounded off about the star's decision to purchase such an extravagant gift for her daughter.

"I think it's ridiculous, but if that's how she wants to spend her money...," one person tweeted.

"I hope she’s teaching her self-respect and not to value labels," another said.

"Materialism and gratefulness are mutually exclusive. Pray for her daughter," another wrote.

"A little much," someone else tweeted.

Others argued that Kent's gift was a harmless and that many people buy expensive gifts for their child.

"This is the same thing a lot of mothers do," one person wrote. "A lot of babies get silver… the problem is a 1-year-old doesn’t even know what a birthday is, so a valuable gift that can last a very long time and gain value is a smart gift!"

"I think your gift to her is precious and very nostalgic," someone said. "You just go on being the best mommy to her."

Kent also took to her Instagram feed to share a birthday tribute to her little one whom she share with ex-fiancé, film producer Randall Emmett.

"Happy first birthday to you, Ocean. This past year has been the best year of my life. You are the most amazing thing to ever happen to me. You are sweet, determined, independent, curious — a bright light in our lives,” she wrote.

"You are going to do incredible things in this world, baby. I will always be here to catch you when you fall, carry the weight when it gets too heavy and protect you with all I have," she continued. "Being your mama is an honour, O. Happy birthday, baby girl.”
