Laura Geller shares her simple “guide” to “lazy girl makeup.”
The makeup artist reveals the only steps you need for a “shorter,” more “refined routine” that still looks flattering.
“I do as little as I can, to get out the door as quick as I can,” she says.
Laura Geller knows that wearing a full face of makeup isn’t everyone’s vibe—and if it is, even those of us who love a full face can’t do it every day. The makeup artist believes that sometimes, less is more. So, she’s sharing with Prevention her exact routine for when she just needs to “get out the door,” quickly. In fact, she’s dishing on what she calls “the lazy girl guide to makeup.”
Though she uses the term “lazy,” the final look gives off the opposite sentiment. “I do as little as I can, to get out the door as quick as I can,” Geller explains. “It sounds like a lot, but it’s really a much more refined routine and a shorter routine.” From her Balance-n-Brighten Color Correcting Foundation to mascara, she’s sharing tips for a quick, easy makeup look below.
Start with the “three E’s”
It’s all about the eyebrow, eye line, and eyelash. “The whole premise behind the three e’s is doing as little as possible,” Geller elaborates. “When you’re doing your makeup, you should be thinking about, ‘How am I going to make my eyes look bigger and more open?’ And you don’t always get that from eyeshadow, but you are going to get it from liner, lashes, and brows.”
Geller recommends always wearing volumizing mascara to open up the eyes and a thin application of dark, waterproof eyeliner for definition. She also stresses the importance of filling in eyebrows with an eyebrow pencil, especially if your brows “are not as full,” which she says tends to happen with age. “It’s like the hair on your head. Restoring the look of a fuller brow gives you so much more vanity.”
Even out the complexion
While Geller says you can stop at the three e’s, she usually likes to even out her complexion with a quick foundation application. “For the face, typically for me it’s going to be a foundation that I can just brush on, or take a powder puff and put on quickly because I don’t really want to spend time worrying that I have something creamy or liquidy that I have to make sure is really blended in everywhere,” she explains. Geller says that her brand’s Balance-n-Brighten Color Correcting Foundation is perfect for this step since it’s “super forgiving” and offers both “natural coverage” as well as “heavier coverage” depending on your preference.
You can also add concealer if you feel you need it, Geller says, but otherwise, she recommends just smiling and popping a little blush on the apples of the cheeks to bring some vibrance back to the skin.
As for bronzer? “I barely use bronzer,” Geller admits. She doesn’t consider it a necessary step, especially for a quick routine, but if you have a particularly light complexion that you feel benefits from a bit of warmth, she suggests using a shade that doesn’t lean too orange and lightly brushing it all over the face.
If you’re someone who likes to add color to your lids, Geller recommends quickly sweeping some blush or bronzer across your lids. “That way, you don’t even have to worry about doing a lot of eye shadows.”
Finish with lipstick
“And then it’s time for a lipstick that you don’t need to worry about being careful with in respect to shaping,” Geller says. “So not too dense a color, something you can put on without needing perfect accuracy.” Our pick? The Laura Geller Beauty Jelly Balm Hydrating Lip Color, which is lightweight, nourishing, and provides the perfect wash of color.
