Lauryn Ajufo: "I don't think there is a Black girl out there that hasn't had a bad hair experience"
Here at The Cosmo Black Beauty Hub we absolutely do not gatekeep, so when we get a chance to quiz some of our favourite Black women about their go-to beauty products tips and treatments we don't hold back– after all, that's how our Little Black Beauty Book Franchise was born. It's all the tea on our favourite star's life in beauty, served hot.
This week we caught up with Luther: Fallen Sun star, Lauryn Ajufo...
My Little Black Beauty Book: Lauryn Ajufo
What does Black beauty mean to you?
Being unapologetically yourself and embracing every inch of yourself. Knowing that you are the queen. When you walk out on the streets and you're on the roads, it's all about you.
Favourite skin treatment?
I'm very simple. I don't like to play around, I love the Cowshed 90 min signature facial and a little lip balm, and I'm good to go.
What’s you wash-day routine?
Wash day is long! My current favourite products are by a brand called Plantmade. My wash day consists of shampooing, detangling it and then letting a deep treatment sit in it for a while with a heat cap on, probs watching an episode of Suits or something, then I wash it out. It takes a good two hours. My hair is very, very thick and full density. It's a lot. So I always try to cut down the time and do it all at once.

Go-to hairdresser?
My mother! She is my hair stylist at the moment, and she attempts any style that I ask for.
Have you had any bad hair experiences?
I don't think there is a Black girl out there that hasn't had a bad hair experience. I went to get my hair washed by someone who's never washed Black hair before, but I thought, Let's experiment. And I was left with a very bad matted mess, which left me in tears. So I had to start the process again of detangling and then blowdrying, because it was a massive mess.
It is very, very disheartened. I'm a huge advocate for if you claim you're a hair stylist, I believe that should by for all types of hair. So, to ask for a service to be provided and then it's not, is heart-wrenching.
Skincare product you can’t live without?
Aveeno. I suffered from eczema as a kid growing up, I had it very, very badly and nothing worked for me. But Aveeno is my best friend now, she's been there for me for years. And shout out to Melissa's Wardrobe as she put me onto the body oil.
Face CALM+RESTORE® Oat Gel Moisturiser
Body treatment you love?
I actually moisturise my skin wet. I know that sounds weird, but your skin absorbs the moisture better, so I'll be wet, and then I will dose myself in Aveeno Oil, and then I'll dose myself in shea butter.
Skin Relief Body Oil Spray
Your biggest beauty splurge?
Has to be my hair. I recently bought the best bundles ever from Heat Free Hair. May have cost me an arm and a leg, but everyone has been like "Is this your hair?" and that's the goal.
Makeup mishaps?
I love makeup and I think as a Black woman, it's really important to experiment with colour and I did that once with a blue smokey eye. I wasn't too sure of the shade, and I had to go out that day so I asked everyone at home if it looked good beforehand and I had to wash it all off! Not every colour is for us, but colour is for us.
Your makeup bag wouldn’t be the same without…
The Bobbi Brown Vitamin C Face Base Moisturiser is my holy grail. Because not only does it act as a primer it's also a moisturiser and moisturising is the key to everything before putting on makeup!
