Laverne Cox Wears Mugler’s ‘Sea Urchins’ Dress From Spring 1989 Collection at Emmy Awards 2023
Laverne Cox wore an archival look from Mugler’s spring 1989 “Les Atlantes” collection on the Emmy Awards 2023 red carpet in Los Angeles on Monday. Named “Les Echineides” or “Sea Urchins,” the two-piece look featured sharp details and a form-fitting silhouette.
The top, a bustier-style corset, features cups, boning and a concealed hook-and-eye closure. The corresponding skirt features a floor-length, skin-tight pencil silhouette made from the same material and dyed the same jet-black hue.

Mugler’s entire spring 1989 collection featured futuristic elements similar to those shown in Cox’s ensemble. Details like chromatic colorways, fin-like textural elements and high-contrast angular edges were implemented into the looks for an “out-of-this-world” aesthetic. Keeping the model’s appearance consistent with the nature of the garments, selective makeup looks used bold colors, three-dimensional appliqués and heavy contouring.
Cox is a well-known fan of Mugler, having even attended several of the brand’s fashion shows dressed head-to-toe in pieces from previous collections. On Nov. 15, the actress attended the opening of the “Thierry Mugler: Couturissime” exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in New York in an all-black sculptural Mugler look.
For the Emmys, Cox’s piece came from her own personal archive collection. The host acquired the look from Tab Vintage, a resale outlet that specializes in rare, wearable designer vintage.
Cox hosted “Live From E!” on the red carpet. The Primetime Emmys, presented by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, honor excellence in the television industry. Comedian Anthony Anderson hosted the 75th annual ceremony, which was broadcast on Fox. Although the awards show typically takes place in September, the 2023 Emmys were postponed until January due to the concurrent Screen Actors and Writers Guild strikes.
