Levi’s Celebrates 501 Day with Exclusive Capsule Collection
Levi’s is celebrating 501 Day on May 20, the birthday of the original 501 blue jeans. In honor of the milestone, the iconic denim-maker is debuting an exclusive capsule collection that includes a new men’s 501 jean, a women’s 501 short, and a men’s denim vest.
The capsule collection is inspired by the rock ’n’ roll music capitals of the country — from Austin and New York to Nashville and San Francisco. In classic rock ’n’ roll fashion, the men’s denim features distressed patches, while the vest and shorts include frayed edges.
Each denim piece is imbued with a sense of musical nostalgia featuring colorful sketches of palm trees, peace symbols, musical notes, and guitars among playful patches of cacti, stars, and vinyls. Although my favorite detail is a stitched phrase at the bottom of the vest in red, which says: “saved by rock ’n’ roll.” It is a vibrant, visual embodiment of the rock ’n’ roll musical scene that has dominated since the ’60s.
To help celebrate 501 Day — in addition to Levi’s 50th anniversary, which is also this year — America’s favorite denim brand enlisted an eclectic mix of creative individuals, including Solange Knowles, Snoop Dogg, Cole Alexander from the Black Lips, and stylist Karla Welch, to share how denim has influenced their style on stage, as well as how music has influenced culture as a whole in a special short documentary. It wasn’t too long ago when a musician wearing denim on stage was an act of rebellion. Now, it’s hard to find anyone without a pair of jeans, especially a pair of 501s.
As Solange notes in the short film, “It [music] gave us a certain language, it gave us a certain movement, it gave us a form of expression.”
