This long-lasting plant will bring instant cheer to every room at Christmas
If you’re hunting for a festive plant that’s a little different from the usual poinsettia or amaryllis, why not try winterberry holly?
Strikingly seasonal with bold red berries and bare branches, this cheerful, long-lasting plant will bring a touch of natural charm to your home throughout Christmas. Thanks to these expert tips, you’ll have all the inspiration you need to style it beautifully, too.
‘Winterberry holly, or Ilex verticillata, is a deciduous plant that’s a real winter showstopper,’ explains Igor Podyablonskiy of MyFlowers. ‘While its leaves fall away during the colder months, its vibrant red berries remain, creating a striking contrast against its bare branches.’
Native to North America, this plant is eye-catching and versatile, making it a favourite for florists and interior enthusiasts. ‘Whether crafting a centrepiece or adding a festive flourish to your decor, it’s a natural choice for the season,' says Igor.
How to style and care for winterberry holly
Winterberry holly lends itself to a variety of festive arrangements, and it's not too late to buy some branches from your local florist. According to Igor, it’s ideal for wreaths and garlands: ‘Mix it with eucalyptus leaves or dried oranges for a truly seasonal display. The red berries really pop against the green foliage and add a touch of vibrancy,’ he says.
For something more contemporary, try bundling the branches with twine or ribbon and hanging them in windows or doorways. It’s a simple yet effective way to add interest to your space. Alternatively, place a few sprigs in a clear vase for a minimalist look or combine them with evergreen foliage for a rustic yet elegant centrepiece. ‘You can even add fairy lights or candles to the arrangement for extra sparkle,’ Igor suggests. And don’t forget gift-wrapping—a small bundle of holly tied to presents is a thoughtful, festive touch.
To keep your winterberry holly looking its best, Igor recommends cutting the stems at an angle before placing them in fresh, cool water. 'Change the water every few days to prevent bacterial buildup,' he says, 'and keep the arrangement away from direct heat or sunlight to maintain its vibrancy. Outdoors, winterberry thrives naturally, but with a little care, it can last for weeks indoors, making it perfect for the entire festive period.'
