A Look Back at All of Kate Middleton’s Most Festive Christmas Outfits
The British royals take their Christmases very seriously. Traditionally, the royal family makes the journey to Sandringham, the late Queen Elizabeth's beloved country home, to celebrate in an intimate setting. The custom was put on hiatus in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, but returned in 2022 after King Charles III ascended the throne.
Many of these celebrations take place behind closed doors, but the public does catch a glimpse of the family when they head to St Mary Magdalene church for services Christmas morning. Since Kate Middleton and Prince William tied the knot in 2011, the Princess of Wales has accompanied her husband to Sandringham most Christmases. While the princess is always impeccably dressed, she pulls out all the stops when the holiday rolls around. Below, see all of her festive Christmas outfits, from 2011 to today.
2023
For the annual Christmas church service at St Mary Magdalene, Kate opted for a bespoke royal blue coat from Alexander McQueen that she paired with matching Gianvito Rossi boots, a Juliette Millinery fascinator, and an Emmy London clutch. The Princess of Wales also used the outfit as an opportunity to pay tribute to Princess Diana by wearing the late royal's double-drop sapphire and diamond earrings.
2022
Christmas at Sandringham returned in 2022 with a bittersweet twist. It was the first Christmas since Queen Elizabeth's death, but also the first for King Charles III since ascending the throne. (It also happened to be Prince Louis's Christmas walk debut!) For the festive gathering, Kate wore a forest green Alexander McQueen coat with a matching feathered hat and brown suede boots.
2021
The annual royal trip to Sandringham on Christmas was once again canceled in 2021 after Queen Elizabeth announced she would remain at Windsor for the holidays as a precautionary measure. Nonetheless, Kate managed to show off her holiday style for the season at a Christmas carol concert she hosted at Westminster Abbey, donning a long, scarlet coat dress with a festive bow detail and matching heels.
2020
While the royals were unable to gather like usual on Christmas Day in 2020, we'd be remiss not to squeeze in one pre-Christmas look from the then Duchess of Cambridge. Kate Middleton and Prince William joined Queen Elizabeth for an event to thank those volunteering during the Christmas season. The Duchess wore a fur-lined green coat and dazzling teardrop earrings.
2019
The Duchess of Cambridge chose a palette of grey and green for her 2019 Christmas ensemble, including a fur-trimmed coat, green fascinator, and a matching clutch and heels—but her coordinating didn't end there. A young Princess Charlotte sported a similarly-hued, double-breasted jacket.
2018
Few shades are more classically “Christmas” than a warm berry red, and the Duchess of Cambridge committed to the hue for her 2018 Christmas look. Wearing a Catherine Walker coat, Jane Taylor “halo band,” and Gianvito Rossi suede pumps, Kate Middleton was a vision in monochrome.
2017
It's not often that the royals step out in bold patterns, but when they do, it's usually a tartan or plaid. For her 2017 Christmas look, the Duchess of Cambridge chose to wear a festive peacoat by Miu Miu—punctuated by simple black accessories, including a fur hat, gloves, tights, and suede pumps.
2016
Kate Middleton brought her family to her hometown for holidays in 2016—and the Cambridges are seen here in coordinating maroons while heading off to a Christmas Day church service. The Duchess chose a fur trimmed coat, with matching pumps and a (slightly) brighter suede clutch.
2015
For Christmas Day in 2015, the Duchess of Cambridge bundled up in a hunter green Max Mara coat, high black boots, a simple fascinator, and black gloves.
2014
The Duchess of Cambridge paired a tweed coat with a deep brown hat by Lock & Co. on Christmas Day in 2014—but our eyes are on the pop of pattern coming from what looks like a silk scarf underneath.
2013
Another festive-patterned moment from the Duchess, this time in the form of a Black Watch tartan coat. She topped her look off with a color-coordinated fascinator.
2011
For her first official Christmas as a member of the royal family, Kate Middleton chose a subdued maroon ensemble, including a coat and velvet hat by Jane Corbett.
