Which “Love Is Blind” Season 5 Couples Are Still Together?
Love Is Blind is a genuine pop culture phenomenon, but it's not exactly a hopeful show. After the earlier seasons' fairytale love stories (mostly Lauren and Cameron) and relatable heroines, the Netflix reality series about "falling in love sight unseen" has primarily offered a steady stream of discourse-generating drama, as well as several allegations from previous contestants of "inhumane working conditions" on set. Despite this (or maybe in some cases because of it), viewers continue to tune in to see the results of each installment, including how many engagements end with "I do"s at the altar.
Season 5 came to a conclusion this past weekend, capping off the stories of the Houston-based cast with an anticlimactic finale (featuring the fewest couples who made it to the altar in franchise history) and a reunion that most notable for not being live (following season 4's disastrous attempt at a live show). Below, read on for our breakdown of where season 5's couples stand over a year after filming. Warning: season 5 finale and reunion spoilers ahead.
Lydia and Milton
Lydia and Milton connected early in the pods, bonding over their love of rocks. (She's a geologist and he's a petroleum engineer.) Though Lydia was initially hesitant because of their seven-year age gap, she eventually began to admire his stable maturity. They hit a snag when Lydia confessed that she had previously dated another one of the pod men, Uche, but she and Milton quickly worked past it and got engaged.
They also had an immediate physical spark in Mexico, but they began to hit some more road bumps when they arrive back in Houston, including Milton's mother and sister's doubts about the engagement and age gap. The bigger issue was when Uche confronted the pair with his accusation that Lydia had sabotaged his pod relationship, after joining the show upon learning that he was cast. Milton quickly brushed this off (using a "three-dimensional calculus" analogy to say that Uche and Lydia's past doesn't concern him), but he and Lydia did eventually have an argument about their different responses to the conflict. While Lydia was a naturally emotional person, Milton told her that he wished she would react rationally instead, and she understandably felt judged.
However, once they made it to the altar, both Lydia and Milton said "I do" and officially tied the knot! Fast forward a year and a half to the reunion, and the pair are still happily married. Lydia has become besties with Milton's mom, and the pair even held a second wedding in Lydia's hometown in Puerto Rico. Congrats to them.
Stacy and Izzy
Izzy's time in the pods was marked by a love triangle between himself, Johnie, and Stacy. His connection with Johnie was more emotional, while he and Stacy had fun and easy conversations in the pods. However, after Johnie opened up about her past relationships, Izzy became concerned about her emotional baggage. This happened around the same time that Stacy, who admitted she wasn't great at sharing her emotions, opened up about how much she liked about him in a vulnerable moment. Izzy broke things off with Johnie, and he and Stacy got engaged.
After an easy time in Mexico, Stacy and Izzy realized they had very different lifestyles back in Houston. (She owned a home and was concerned about replacing the HVAC, while he only owned disposable dishes and kept a "lost and found" drawer from his past hookups.) Still, both of their families were supportive, and they got through several fights and remained committed. The turning point was an off-screen conversation they had about Izzy's finances and bad credit, which happened with just days left before the wedding. Stacy felt that Izzy hadn't told her earlier, and wasn't "totally transparent in a time where transparency is absolutely needed." When they make it to the alter, Izzy says yes, but Stacy says they need more time.
At the reunion, Stacy and Izzy reveal that they ended things a week after the wedding, and that they didn't speak for a year after. Apparently Houston is a small town (or at least Stacy and Izzy's Houston), because they eventually reconciled after running into each other at a bar. They even kissed that night, but still decided to go their separate ways on good terms. They've since run into each other again—that time at cooking class where they both had dates—and they're both seeing someone new.
Johnie and Chris
Johnie also had her own love triangle in the pods, as she was torn between Izzy and Chris. At first it seemed that Izzy and Johnie were each others' priorities, so Johnie cut things off with Chris. He was devastated, as she was his number-one choice, and Johnie was noticeably affected by how much he cared. However, Izzy soon cut things off with Johnie after she told him about her romantic history, with Johnie describing herself as a "walking red flag." After this, Johnie asked to speak to Chris again and try to mend their relationship, but Chris eventually decided not to propose to her.
Weeks later, Johnie and Chris attended the pod reunion barbecue in Houston together. It turned out that they had met at the airport following filming and started dating. Johnie said at the time that Chris had even met her mom, and they were officially boyfriend and girlfriend. Though Johnie and Chris were happy and wanted to let bygones be bygones, Stacy and Izzy still had their (one-sided) beef with Johnie, and spent most of the party calling her "sketchy as f--k" and warning Chris about her. Even though Johnie was moved to tears, Chris comforted her throughout the party.
At the reunion, the pair reveal that their relationship actually ended soon after the barbecue. Johnie explains that they did not see each other for a few weeks after the party, and that she eventually heard from a friend that Chris was out with another woman. He and Johnie didn't see each other again after that. Chris is now living with his new girlfriend, and he admits on the reunion that he didn't handle the situation well and has since apologized to Johnie. While Johnie was initially devastated, she's since gotten over Chris and has been dating someone for a year.
Taylor and JP
At first it seemed like Taylor and JP would have this season's meant-to-be edit. The couple quickly connected in the pods and focus on each other from the start, even trading cute nicknames like "sugar butt." They also seemed to suit each other, with Taylor having a bubbly talkative personality compared to JP's quiet demeanor. They're the first couple to get engaged, but their in-person reveal was quite awkward. Taylor did most of the talking to fill the long pauses, and JP makes a joke about her false eyelashes.
The awkward silence just built when the couple arrives in Mexico. Though JP said that he was committed and wanted to continue their engagement, Taylor got more and more frustrated at their lack of communication, especially when she saw the other couples hit it off. After days of JP brushing her off, he finally admitted during a late-night conversation that he hadn't been attracted to her at the reveal, saying that she seemed "fake" with makeup "caked" on her face. His response to Taylor's shock and confusion was to tell her to just not wear makeup in the future, but she said she wouldn't let him tell her what to do, and left to stay in another room.
The next morning, which was the day the couples were set to leave Mexico, Taylor told JP that their relationship was entirely different from the pods, and that she didn't want to continue on and move in with him. Over a year later at the reunion, the pair confirm that they didn't speak again after filming. JP admits that he could have worded the makeup thing better, but Taylor stands up for herself, saying that she believed he hadn't been attracted to her at all, and that he had "belittled" her. Both of them are now seeing new people.
Uche and Aaliyah
Aaliyah and Uche had the most tumultuous time on the show this season, though they quickly got along upon meeting in the pods. Their first roadblock came when Aaliyah confessed that she had previously cheated in a past relationship. Uche responded in a very judgmental and demeaning way, to the point where she left the conversation in tears. Still, Uche apologized and they decided to continue their relationship. Then, Uche confessed that he had previously dated Lydia, who had become Aaliyah's best friend in the pods. Though at first Aaliyah wanted to move forward with Uche and stay friends with Lydia, the two women eventually came at odds when Lydia began oversharing about her past with Uche (as well as dropping the bombshell that she and Uche had slept together just three months earlier). Aaliyah began to have doubts in Uche, and she decided to leave the pods, leaving him alone and clueless on engagement day.
After Uche discovered Aaliyah was gone, a producer got them connected on the phone, where Aaliyah explained she left after an offscreen argument with Lydia. She explained that she could no longer stay in the women's quarters with Lydia, and that she'd begun to wonder if Lydia followed Uche onto the show. Days later, Aaliyah and Uche met in-person in Houston, and Aaliyah admits to the doubts she'd started to have in their relationship, adding that she didn't feel comfortable to share them after the previous cheating conversation. She also said that she still wanted to be with Uche, but Uche felt that they wouldn't be able to get through the stress of marriage if she couldn't get through the pods. On camera, we hear Uche end things with Aaliyah, but it turns out that they did eventually reunite.
At the reunion (which Uche didn't attend), Aaliyah confirms that they briefly dated after filming. She reveals that they eventually ended for several reasons, including her hearing that Uche told some other cast members that she wasn't his physical type. She also says that Uche would still be demeaning towards her in some conversations, saying that often he seemed more like the Uche from the barbecue scenes than the Uche she fell for in the pods. Aaliyah is now happily dating someone new.
