Luke and Lucie Meier are leaving Jil Sander
Yesterday in Milan, Luke and Lucie Meier staged their final show for Jil Sander. OTB Group, the parent company of the label, announced their departure as co-creative directors after eight years. In the statement, OTB Chairman Renzo Rosso thanked them “for their vision, passion for excellence, and dedication to the brand.” The news has been long speculated, with many expecting that autumn/winter 2025 would be their last collection. Rumours became clearer post-show when Rosso was filmed handing a bouquet of flowers to the designers. A successor has not yet been named.
Luke and Lucie Meier’s successful tenure at Jil Sander has been marked by a design vision that incorporates that of the house’s founder – sharp, minimal – with a contemporary ethos. Since joining the brand in 2017, the Meiers injected touches their own personal flair into the collections, playing with embellishments and textures. This season, for example, the pair focused on metallic fringe and fuzzy fur, as well as pops of blues, reds, and pinks, streamlined leather suiting, and expertly tailored outerwear.
Jil Sander founded her namesake label at the age of 24 in 1968. Over the last several decades, she has returned as creative director three times, the last stint of which was from 2011 to 2013, after Raf Simons moved on from Jil Sander to take the reins at Dior. The Meiers took over after Luke was the design director of Supreme and founded his own cult menswear label, OAMC, in 2013 (which he still runs). Lucie has worked for Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, and Christian Dior throughout her career.
This is yet another move in the endless cycle of creative director churn, but a creative loss that will certainly be mourned by fans of the Meiers, those who have long subscribed to their arty, edgy, Jil Sander era.
