Macy’s Promotes Barbie Cameron to Chief Stores Officer
Macy’s Inc. has promoted Barbie Cameron to chief stores officer of the Macy’s division, effective Feb. 16.
It’s a critical role, particularly in light of Macy’s dramatically evolving retail fleet. Last year, Macy’s laid out a plan that calls for shuttering a total of about 150 Macy’s sites through 2026, including mostly department stores and a handful of home and Backstage off-price stores. Of the 150, 66 are scheduled to close this year.

While downsizing the fleet, Macy’s is investing in its remaining 350 “go-forward” locations through fiscal 2026. Investments include additional staffing by the women’s fitting rooms, at checkout areas and in the women’s shoes and handbags areas; improved visual merchandising; beefing up better-selling brands; editing less productive brands, and making the stores cleaner. Macy’s recently reported that investments have been made at about 50 Macy’s go-forward stores so far, and that these locations have experienced better sales and higher customer satisfaction scores for three consecutive quarters.
Cameron was the senior vice president and regional director of stores for the Eastern region, and had been the interim chief stores officer since August. She reports to Adrian Mitchell, chief operating officer and chief financial officer, of Macy’s Inc. Marc Mastronardi was the previous chief stores officer for Macy’s, but he left in August 2024 to become president of Equinox.
In its announcement Friday, Macy’s indicated that Cameron will lead the store operations across the Macy’s nameplate, from flagships to small format stores and its call center operations. “Barbie will spearhead initiatives to modernize Macy’s, improve the shopping environment and elevate the customer and colleague experience, as outlined in the company’s Bold New Chapter strategy, the three-year plan designed to achieve sustainable profitable growth,” Macy’s said.
Mitchell said: “Barbie is an experienced retailer and has built a strong track record during her 37-year career at Macy’s. I am confident that her deep understanding of our customer will continue to drive the Bold New Chapter strategy forward by improving in-store experiences and modernizing Macy’s for today’s consumer.”
Cameron started her career at Macy’s as a sales manager and quickly advanced to store manager. She has held numerous leadership positions across Macy’s, including roles in merchandising execution and buying. In 2020, she was named senior vice president and regional director, East Region.
