When a man found a lottery ticket worth $50,000 after he moved some of his mom’s furniture, he thought it was a joke. A visit to Maryland Lottery headquarters confirmed otherwise.

The mother and son, who have decided to remain anonymous, claimed their $50,000 prize in April, according to a press release from the lottery. The pair have decided to split the winnings of the $5 Holiday Luck Doubler ticket, hence their team name “We’ll Split It.”

The man first discovered the ticket while shifting around furniture at his mom’s house in Nottingham. She had purchased the big-winning ticket and four other scratch-off tickets as gifts that she planned on putting into her grown children’s stockings, according to the Maryland Lottery. When her son found them months later, they agreed that he could scratch off the tickets and they would share any prize money.

Later at home, the son looked in disbelief with his wife at the ticket after they realized it was worth $50,000. The Holiday Luck Doubler costs $5 with 15 chances to win, per the lottery. The mother and son won the top prize for the game.

“Did that really just happen?” his wife remembered asking, according to the organization. The son quickly called his mom, who confirmed the ticket wasn’t a prank.

Now that they’re thousands of dollars richer, the son told the lottery that he wants to save for a house and give back money that he owes his mom. “So, she’ll actually end up getting more,” the son said, according to the Maryland Lottery.

His mom said she’ll share her prize money with her other children and grandchildren.

The Maryland Lottery will also send a $500 bonus to the liquor store that sold the prize-winning ticket.
