Man Steals Fiancée's Christmas Gift Idea for Himself; Now She's Having Doubts About Their Future
A woman took to Reddit after her carefully planned Christmas gift for her future father-in-law was taken by her fiancé
One woman is seeking support from the Reddit community after her fiancé "stole" her Christmas gift idea for her future father-in-law.
“I love gift-giving,” shares the 23-year-old woman in a now-viral post. “I spend so much time and effort picking out the perfect gift for someone, rarely going off lists because I want to find something original that I know they’d love or use.”
This year, she had been particularly excited about her gifts as she spent more than a month curating her holiday shopping list. And in a festive twist, her husband-to-be decided to join her last-minute trip to shop.
“I told him ahead of time I wanted to get his parents both nice drinking glasses since we often drink together at family gatherings,” she explains. “I picked out some wine glasses for his mom and was looking at whiskey glasses for his dad.”

But when they reached the whiskey glass display, her fiancé did something that left her stunned. “He picked up the two sets I was considering and decided that he was going to get one of them for his dad,” she recounts. “I told him he couldn’t steal my idea. It was my only, carefully thought-out gift, and it wasn’t fair of him."
Her fiancé said that both of them could get him the same gift. Despite her protests, her fiancé insisted on his decision.
“He says I ‘cannot stop him from buying glasses for his own dad,’ ” she shares. “He had put down the rest of the stuff he was looking at, rushed to the checkout, and purchased the exact set I had decided on by the time I got back.”
Her fiancé’s refusal to see her side of things added to her frustration, as she was also struggling to come up with another gift idea for his dad on short notice. Now, the situation has left her with some doubts.
Stuck with confusion on how to navigate the disagreement, her friend suggested a petty act of revenge — stealing it back and wrapping it as her own — she writes. While the bride-to-be is tempted, she admits, she is searching for a more practical solution.
Some Reddit users suggested presenting the gift as a couple, while others said she should get her future father-in-law a bottle of his favorite whiskey to complement the glasses.
For now, the woman is still grappling with her emotions, and how best to address the issue with her fiancé. “I don’t know how to proceed, or if I’m overreacting,” she admits.
