This Mango barn jacket actually has me wishing for autumn

Barn jackets are autumn's biggest outerwear trendMango

Now that we're officially in September, we are more than ready to start embracing all the autumn winter fashion trends – starting with outerwear. After needing no more than a cardigan to keep us warm for the past few months, we're practically itching to pull on something a little more heavy-duty that will leave us feeling snug as a bug in a rug.

Once the mercury dips, it's beyond tempting to leave the house wrapped up in your duvet or a dressing gown. But, for those who don't want to compromise on style, there's only one outerwear silhouette you need to know about for the new season: the barn jacket. Just ask Dua Lipa and Alexa Chung.

Easily identifiable by its neutral colour palette and contrasting collar, most barn jackets also feature obvious, oversized pockets to tap into the utilitarian trend. And, in evidence of its ‘must have’ status as the piece of the season, the high street is *full* of varying designs. Though this Fashion Writer's favourite is easily Mango's take on the look.

The Pockets Cotton Parka is an oversized style notably featuring brass latched clasp hardware alongside those aforementioned identifiers: a brown corduroy shirt-style collar and two large front flap pockets. I wasted no time in adding it to bag and can confirm it's just as good IRL as it looks online. As well as the three clasps (which admittedly are a little stiff upon first wear), there are also pop stud fastenings to keep you cosy.

While the weather is still relatively mild though, I'll be wearing it open over jeans and t-shirts for off-duty weekend looks as well as satin slip dresses to give a cool girl contrast to floaty, feminine dresses.

At £99.99, I'd argue it is priced fairly reasonably for a jacket, especially one that is made from 100% cotton. Most other high street designs are around the £100 mark, too. But, if you're after a more budget-friendly option, you can't go wrong with any of the below, either:

Alas, sorry trench coats, but the barn jacket is the only transitional layer you need RN.
