McDonald's celebrates 50th anniversary of Egg McMuffin with new deals, menu items

Fifty years ago, McDonald's unveiled a gamechanger to the breakfast food industry, the Egg McMuffin. In honor of egg, cheese and Canadian Bacon all sandwiched between a toasted English muffin, the fast food chain is hosting several specials throughout the month of March.

Introduced in 1975, the Egg McMuffin was the brainchild of Herb Peterson, a McDonald's franchisee in Santa Barbara, California. Herb, according to a news release, presented the sandwich as a to-go of the diner classic Eggs Benedict to Ray Kroc, the businessman who transformed McDonald's into what folks know it as today.

"When I watched my father introduce this idea to Ray Kroc, we could not have anticipated it would become the foundation for the renowned McDonald’s breakfast menu," David Peterson, Herb's son and McDonald’s owner and operator, said in a news release. "It’s been remarkable to see people embrace this innovation over the last five decades, and now we get to share that heritage with a new generation of breakfast fans."

Herb Peterson is responsible for the creation of the McDonald's Egg McMuffin. Peterson was a McDonald's franchisee in Santa Barbara, California.

In honor of the Golden Anniversary, here are several deals and new menu items coming to a McDonald's near you.

Egg McMuffin Day

The celebration kicks off with Egg McMuffin Day on Sunday, March 2. Through the McDonald's app, customers may purchase an Egg McMuffin or Sausage McMuffin with Egg for $1.

BOGO Sausage McMuffin with Egg

Between March 3-30, customers may enjoy a buy-one-get-one free Sausage McMuffin with Egg when ordering a delivery through the McDonald's app.

McDonald's releases bagel sandwiches nationwide

For the first time, bagel sandwiches will be available at McDonald's locations nationwide. A plain bagel can be mixed and matched with any McDonald's breakfast sandwich.

How many calories does the Egg McMuffin have?

The Egg McMuffin, made with an English Muffin, egg, Canadian Bacon, American cheese, salted butter and clarified butter, is 310 calories.

Krispy Kreme doughnuts available at New York locations

In other news related to McDonald's, all McDonald's locations in New York will carry Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
