Is Meghan Markle the Next Kate Middleton?

Could it be? Is Prince Harry’s status as the world’s most wanted bachelor coming to an end? This weekend it was announced that the young royal has spent the past five months or so quietly dating Meghan Markle, an actress best known for her role on the television series Suits. The couple has yet to make a public appearance, but the news that the Prince’s latest paramour is a Northwestern University–educated actress and humanitarian—as opposed to a debutante or fellow royal—is cause for some excitement. (And some implication that HRH may be taking the whole romantic partnership thing a bit more seriously.) Every young woman connected to Harry goes on to garner her share of tabloid attention, but Markle, with her own career and her role as a United Nations Women’s advocate and ambassador for World Vision, seems to be more interested in championing worthy causes than just making headlines. She was discovered by a talent manager while working for the U.S. Embassy in Argentina, and she’s passionate about politics and women’s rights. And most notably for our current purposes, like Kate Middleton before her, she’s developed a distinctively ladylike personal style. In fashion circles, Middleton is famed for her ability to cause a sensation with her mix of polished and affordable pieces, many of which sell out the moment she wears them. Markle, who has a well-documented love of Victoria Beckham dresses and Lanvin (in addition to her own namesake capsule collection with Canadian store Reitmans), seems on the cusp of starting a few trends of her own.

Already adept at red carpets and awards shows, Markle has shown herself able to balance the worlds of sexy and stately within her wardrobe. She’s right at home sharing outfit updates via Instagram, where she lets followers take a peek at her latest A.L.C. jumpsuit or Reformation slip dress. For big events she hasn’t shied away from glamour, favoring head-turning frocks like the one she wore in January by Dolce & Gabbana. Unexpected picks, such as the silver Misha Nonoo mini she picked for last year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Dinner, prove she’s up to try the latest designs, but classic choices like the simple black wrap dress she sported at Wimbledon keep her down-to-earth. Whether her royal connection will eventually see Markle trading her chic daywear for Alexander McQueen gowns and prim suits remains to be seen, but with or without princess status, this is a socially conscious style star worth watching.
