Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Join First Nations Children for a Wheelchair Basketball Game

The second day of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's British Columbia trip began at the Mount Currie Community Centre.

Per the Sussexes' new website, the center is "on the traditional territory of the Lil’wat Nation," and following a meeting the Duke of Sussex had with Chief Dean Nelson last fall, "the Chief invited the couple to visit their land and speak with Chief Gélpcal of the Lil’wat Nation as well as other tribal counselors and members of their community."

Today, Prince Harry took part in a wheelchair basketball game with local youth, and the couple also received a traditional welcome, and were given a number of symbolic gifts.

"The couple were humbled to be invited and extend their deepest gratitude to Chief Nelson, Chief Gélpcal and the people of the Lil’wat Nation for their generous hospitality and kindness," notes their website.

The event was in line with Invictus Games 2025's mission to partner with local First Nations—the Líl̓wat, Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh. Last night, the Sussexes spent time at the Squamish Líl̓wat Cultural Centre, where they met the four artists who created the logo for next year's sporting event.

One of those artists, Levi Nelson, posted on Facebook, "I met a Prince on Valentine's Day! I had the honor of meeting with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex Prince Harry and Meghan this evening in Whistler, to discuss the meaning of the design for the Invictus Games 2025."

Nelson continued, "What a moment, it felt like a dream, I could barely remember what I said. They were so gracious, I even walked and talked with Meghan for a bit. Prince Harry was so impressed with the design and said it was his favorite! It felt special that they gave their time to have an audience with me and the other artists, because as soon as we walked with them into the S'Istken Hall at the SLCC, they got swarmed, and then I had to go and hobnob with the other hobnobs."

Later today, Meghan and Harry will continue to take part in the Participating Nations Camp, and meet competitors who are being introduced to winter sports for the first time.
