Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Made a Surprise Visit to Uvalde This Past Weekend

In May 2022, just a day after a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, Meghan Markle flew down to the small town to support the community in person. A spokesperson told T&C at the time, she was there to "offer her condolences and support in person to a community experiencing unimaginable grief."

Nearly two years later, Meghan is still supporting the Uvalde community.

This past weekend, Meghan and Prince Harry—who were in Austin for Meghan's South by Southwest appearance—traveled to Uvalde to visit with the families of the victims. There, they met with the family of Irma Garcia, a schoolteacher who was killed in the shooting.

"It was such a beautiful experience, they’re so nice and compassionate, very down to earth, humble people," Garcia's nephew John Martinez told CNN. "It was kind of by surprise, she [Meghan] had called my mom one random day and dropped the news on us not too long ago that she was coming to visit the kids and of course we got so excited."

On X (formerly Twitter), Martinez also shared photos of their visit:

A few months after the school shooting, the Archewell Foundation partnered with the city of Uvalde and Kaboom! to create a playground at DeLeon Park for the children to enjoy. Per Archewell, "Built to be a home for joy and healing, the playground is symbolic of the hope and strength the city has exhibited in its ongoing recovery following the tragic shooting at Robb Elementary School." They added, "This project is an act of the continued support and connection to this community in need."

Also this weekend, Meghan and Harry stopped by the playground for a local event supporting the families of victims. Per News 4 San Antonio, "The event was hosted by KABOOM! which is one of the organizations that made a deep commitment to the community after the 2022 mass shooting at Robb Elementary."
