Menswear style on a budget

In this episode of In The Know’s The Guide, host Jovel Roystan talks to stylist Khalid Briggs (@khalidbriggs) about how to look fresh on a budget.

It’s a common misconception that you have to break the bank if you want to level up your style. Investing in your closet doesn’t have to put a dent in your wallet!

When it comes to fashion on a budget, Roystan’s first tip is to keep it simple. “There’s a reason why minimalism always resurfaces in fashion and that’s because it works,” says Roystan.

“I like to play with really simple, clean basics,” he says while showcasing a Uniqlo long sleeve shirt. Roystan suggests mixing basics up with different colors and patterns to give them new life.

Another tip of Roystan’s is to work in one color palette. For Roystan, he keeps a stock of white and neutral basics that he mixes and matches to create new outfits all the time.

One such outfit pairsa Uniqlo collar shirt with a pair of Zara basic shorts for a breezy look that’s perfect for a summer outing.

But shopping on a budget doesn’t mean sacrificing luxury items. “Just be smart about the ones that you get,” says Roystan. So instead of having an entire outfit be a designer brand, invest in small pieces for a pop of opulence. To demonstrate, Roystan puts on a Prada baseball cap to demonstrate a balance of high and low fashion in a single outfit.

Mixing high and low pieces is how stylist Khalid Briggs stretches his closet on a budget as well. But for him, the high is all in the shoes.

“I think that shoes really are the most important thing so I like to spend most of my money on a budget on a shoe,” Briggs says.

Another tip Briggs shares is to shop off-season to buy pieces at a better price.

“I often tell my clients that sometimes it does help to shop off-season,” says Briggs. “Shopping for summer clothes sometimes at the end of summer is one of the best things that you can do, because you can get some really great pieces—usually an investment piece—for a fraction of the cost.”

But what if you need to put a budget outfit together at the last minute? Roystan is up for the challenge, and makes the perfect brunch ‘fit using pieces from his single color palette stock.

Pairing a white Zara pleated top with white Zara textured suit pants and ivory Converse high tops, Roystan looks put together and ready to get his brunch on.
