Met Gala 2022: The best and worst dressed stars from the red carpet

The biggest names in entertainment and fashion descended upon New York City for the 2022 Met Gala.

The annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, famously held on the first Monday in May, has been organized by Vogue's Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour since 1995. Under her masterful eye, Wintour curated an opulent event celebrating the museum's latest exhibit, "In America: An Anthology of Fashion."

This year's gala featured hosts Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Regina King and Lin-Manuel Miranda, with guests instructed to follow a "Gilded Glamour" dress code "to embody the grandeur — and perhaps the dichotomy — of Gilded Age New York."

Vogue referenced Edith Wharton's novel "The Age of Innocence" as its inspiration for the theme, while noting that the exhibit will feature 13 different rooms, each highlighting a period of American history.

"The stories really reflect the evolution of American style, but they also explore the work of individual tailors, dress-makers, and designers,” Jason Bolton, head curator of the Costume Institute told Vogue. “What’s exciting for me is that some of the names will be very familiar to students of fashion, like Charles James, Halston, and Oscar de la Renta, but a lot of the other names really have been forgotten, overlooked or relegated into the footnotes of fashion history. So one of the main intentions of the exhibition is to spotlight the talents and contributions of these individuals, and many of them are women.”

While attendees are invited to lend their own interpretation to the theme, some seemingly disregarded Wintour's instruction entirely.

After much deliberation, our team of editors have narrowed down their picks for the best and worst dressed stars from the 2022 Met Gala.

BEST: Blake Lively

Lively's extravagant Atelier Versace gown featured nods to New York City architecture and "classic buildings." The actress said she pulled inspiration for the look from Grand Central Station, the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. The attention to detail and reverence for the theme made Lively's dramatic entrance one of the best of the night.

WORST: Camila Cabello

Cabello's funfetti-inspired look did little to evoke visions of gilded glamour. The "Bam Bam" singer's fashion-forward look and Y2K-inspired hair were out of place and would be better suited for an awards show or photoshoot.

BEST: Kacey Musgraves

Musgraves's black Prada gown with jewel encrusted detail referenced elements of Gilded Age fashion, including her fan accessory, while avoiding reading as too kitschy or costume-like.

WORST: Sarah Jessica Parker

Although the silhouette of Parker's gown is the closest to Gilded Age fashion that appeared at the event, the bold stripe fabric and eccentric Philip Treacy hat competed for attention and overpowered the actress.

BEST: Janelle Monae

Monae's monochrome Ralph Lauren gown featured art deco elements that worked to create what the singer called "gilded glamour from the future."

WORST: Emily Ratajkowski

Ratajkowski's over the top look was originally part of Atelier Versace's 1992 collection— and should have stayed a fond memory from the past.

BEST: Jodie Turner-Smith and Joshua Jackson

Turner-Smith and husband Jackson looked elegant in looks by Gucci that channelled early 20th century fashion with a modern twist.

WORST: Kylie Jenner

Even though Jenner paid tribute to the late Virgil Abloh with her Met Gala look, it's hard to find any correlation to the "Gilded Glamour" directive — or support for a backwards baseball cap at the Met Gala.

BEST: Katy Perry

Perry's monochrome Oscar de la Renta combined elements of Gilded Age fashion, including an extravagant bustle and elbow length gloves, with the pop star's personal style, which showed off her legs in a daring mini skirt.

WORST: Gigi Hadid

Hadid looked like she was ready to brave a Canadian winter in a larger-than-life puffer coat and red vinyl cat suit. While the look did combine elements of Gilded Age fashion (the corset and bustier) the duvet-style coat was hard to ignore.

BEST: Shawn Mendes

Mendes looked ready for a leading role in "Bridgerton" thanks to his perfectly tailored Tommy Hilfiger frock coat. While the Canadian singer didn't aim to steal the spotlight, he managed to perfectly execute the theme and look dashing in the process.

WORST: Jared Leto

Leto's affinity for Gucci is well known, however the star consistently veers into kitsch territory. Case in point: this embroidered suit with hot pink bow tie and school-girl hair barrette.
