A new Mexican restaurant is set to debut in this busy Columbia area. Check out where

A new spot for Mexican fare is headed to downtown Columbia near the University of South Carolina’s campus.

El Vago Mexican Kitchen plans to open at 601-A Main St. That’s near the intersection of Main and Blossom streets, right across the street from USC’s Honors College residence hall. Neighboring businesses include The Corner Blend smoothie shop and JJ Tea House.

The new Mexican restaurant has announced soft openings from 4-11 p.m. Aug. 16 and 17 on its social media channels. Details about a broader grand opening are still to come.

“At El Vago, we’re bringing you the best of traditional Mexican cuisine with a modern twist,” the restaurant said on Instagram. “From mouthwatering tacos to irresistible enchiladas, each dish is crafted with love and creativity, ensuring a unique flavor journey that will leave your taste buds dancing!”

El Vago Mexican Kitchen will be making its debut at a fortuitous time, as students are in the process of returning to USC’s campus for the 2024-25 school year. Students were moving into nearby dormitories when a reporter rode by on Monday morning. Classes begin Aug. 20.
