Michael Jordan's Chicago home closes for one third of asking price 12 years ago

Even for icons, not every parting shot will be iconic. And so it was this week that Michael Jordan’s 56,000-square-foot mansion in suburban Chicago closed for $9.5 million—a third of what it was listed for when originally put up for sale a dozen years ago. The buyer has not yet been publicly revealed. Accounting for inflation rates, Jordan will have made out with only 18% of the value he initially sought when he put the Highland Park, Ill., residence on the market in March 2012.

More on this storyline

After its price was repeatedly slashed, the nine-bedroom, 19-bath home had most recently been listed for $14.9 million when it went finally under contract in mid-September. By then, Jordan had spent over $1.8 million in property taxes since putting it up for sale. He and his ex-wife Juanita Vanoy built the home during the mid-1990s, when Jordan was leading the Chicago Bulls to consecutive NBA titles. After the couple divorced in 2006, Jordan took full ownership of the property. In 2013, he decamped the midwest for $35 million mansion in the exclusive Bear’s Club gated golf community in Jupiter, Fla. -via Sportico / December 12, 2024

Brendan Haywood: Playing with Michael Jordan was a blessing. It was wild to think he was both a player and a GM. I’d see guys go out and party with him and think, ‘Y’all realize you’re partying with the boss, right?’ When they asked me to come, I’d just stay in my room and play video games. But MJ showed me why he was the greatest. At 40 years old, he was still in the gym before everyone else, lifting with Tim Grover and getting up shots. His footwork was impeccable. He taught Bobby Simmons, a young player, how to read defenders: ‘When you jab, watch how they react. If they drop this foot, counter this way.’ Everything MJ did was calculated. He wasn’t just guessing—he read body language, anticipated rotations, and always knew his next move. Watching that up close, you realize it’s not by accident. It’s all in the preparation. -via YouTube / December 11, 2024

Stephon Marbury: I think that as a player, LeBron is the most all-around basketball player to ever touch a basketball. There’s nobody like him. Magic was that for me, but then I saw LeBron and what he’s done. You know, on the winning side, as far as playing, taking everything into account—he’s incredible. "But as far as basketball players go—come on, man—you shouldn’t even be mentioning him in the same breath as Michael Jordan. -via YouTube / December 10, 2024
