Miss Scarlet and the Duke viewers are hooked on the PBS Masterpiece show for good reasons. Not only does the British-Irish period drama feature a debonair Duke (Stuart Martin) front and center, but more importantly the show is led by a fearless female detective named Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips). Despite facing several obstacles stemming from a patriarchal Victorian society, Eliza's wit takes her far as she works to solve crimes and establish herself as a respected investigator in London.

Shortly after season one was shared with the U.S. audience in January 2021, the show gained a committed fanbase. Now, thanks to the show's popularity, PBS has announced that season 2 is on the way. Luckily, Good Housekeeping got to chat with the leading lady of the series, who shared many details about what fans can expect when the crime-solving series returns.

When will Miss Scarlet and Duke season 2 come out?

While we don't yet have a specific date to mark on our calendars, according to PBS's press release, Miss Scarlet and the Duke will return to Masterpiece sometime in 2022. If the channel chooses to follow the first season's schedule, fans can likely expect to see new episodes in January 2022 — but we can't say for sure until we hear more details.

That said, Kate tells Good Housekeeping that the cast and crew is planning on filming season 2 in Serbia this upcoming fall (season one was filmed in Dublin, by contrast). From there, she'll have to shoot six episodes in roughly two-and-a-half months.

Based on where we left off with Eliza and William in the season one finale episode, we can only assume that the following cast members will return to the show in some capacity:

  • Kate Phillips as Eliza Scarlet

  • Stuart Martin as William Wellington a.k.a "The Duke"

  • Danny Midwinter as Frank Jenkins

  • Ansu Kabia as Moses

  • Andrew Gower as Rupert Parker

  • Matthew Malone as PC Honeychurch

  • Cathy Belton as Ivy

If new cast members are announced (or one of the current cast members drops out of the show), we'll be sure to update this post with the latest info.

What is season 2 of Miss Scarlet and the Duke going to be about?

All that fans love about the first season of the show — Eliza and William's witty banter, the crime mysteries, etc. — is largely staying the same. But according to Kate, more characters will be sharing the spotlight in upcoming episodes. We'll also learn more about the Duke's backstory before meeting Eliza.

"I think what’s interesting is that in season 2, we’ll see more of Ivy and we’ll see more of Moses and Rupert and those characters are going to be coming into the forefront as well," she reveals.

As for Eliza, things are not necessarily going to be smooth sailing just because she and the Duke left off on a good note. "[Eliza]'s constantly trying to find her way around the obstacles and she’s finding solutions all the time and that’s where the humor and wit comes in, as well. I think we'll see more obstacles and even more adventure."

Anyone who saw Miss Scarlet and the Duke season 1 knows that the chemistry between Eliza and William is undeniable. But even though we see the two agree to get dinner together, it doesn't mean they will take things to the next level immediately in season 2.

“[Their romance] can’t be that simple because I think for Eliza, she is very bright and she has a real instinct for things but I think the area that she has absolutely no confidence in is sexuality and her love life," Kate explains. "That frightens her, she’s not versed in that ... I think she’s got a long way to go until she feels like she can jump into a relationship with someone."

In other words, fans will have to be patient. But at least we know Kate wants Eliza and the Duke to eventually end up together.
