What Miss Universe Looked Like the Year You Were Born

We've had our eyes on the glamorous pageant queens competing for the Miss America crown since 1921, but the Miss Universe competition only began in 1952. Through the years, the international event has featured some inspirational triumphs as well as a few controversies, including Steve Harvey's infamous blunder in 2015. This year, there will be representatives from a record 95 countries vying for the title in Bangkok, Thailand. Take a look at the winner who have been crowned over the last 66 years.

17-year-old Finnish native, Armi Kuusela, center, was the first ever Miss Universe winner.

21-year-old Christiane Martel from France won the second Miss Universe title.

American Miriam Stevenson, left, was the first to be crowned by the previous year's winner in 1954.

21-year-old Hillevi Rombin won the title for Sweden in Long Beach, California.

Carol Morris was the second American to win Miss Universe.

Gladys Zender was the first Latin American woman to be crowned Miss Universe.

19-year-old Miss Columbia, Luz Marina Zulaga, took the crown in 1958.

Akiko Kojima became the first Asian woman to win the Miss Universe title.

Salt Lake City native, Linda Bement, became the third American to be crowned Miss Universe. It was the first time the competition was held in Miami Beach.

Marlene Schmidt was the first and, to date, only German to win the title of Miss Universe.

Miss Argentina, Norma Nolan, was 24 when she won the title in the early 60s.

Iêda Maria Vargas won the title in 1963-a time of major accomplishment for Brazilians, winners of the World Cup that same year.

Corinna Tsopei was the first and only Miss Universe winner from Greece.

Apasra Hongsakula, crowned in 1965, was only the third Thai representative to compete for the title of Miss Universe.

Margareta Arvidsson of Sweden was just 18 years old when she was crowned Miss Universe.

Miss Alabama, Sylvia Hitchcock, became the 16th Miss Universe in 1967.

Martha Vasconcellos of Brazil won the title in 1968.

Gloria Diaz was the first Miss Universe from the Philippines, beating out 60 other contestants. Years later, her daughter Isabelle is her mother's spitting image.

Marisol Malaret, pictured here with Bob Barker, was the first woman from Puerto Rico to be crowned Miss Universe.

Georgina Rizk of Lebanon was the first woman from the Middle East to win the title. The competition was held in Puerto Rico for the first time that year.

Kerry Anne Wells was the first contestant to win a Miss Universe title for Australia. She is pictured here with the Bob Barker and the runners-up.

Margarita Moran of the Philippines won in 1973. The pageant was held in Athens, Greece, for the first time, and the practice of regularly changing pageant locations began.

Amparo Muñoz won the title for Spain, but she relinquished the crown six months after for breaking organizational rules and refusing to go to Japan.

Anne Marie Pohtamo was the second Miss Finland to be crowned after the first-ever Miss Universe winner.

Rina Messinger was the first and only Miss Universe winner to date from Israel.

Janelle Commissiong of Trinidad and Tobago was the first black woman to win Miss Universe.

Margaret Gardiner was 18 when she won the title for South Africa.

Maritza Sayalero was the first Miss Venezuela to be crowned Miss Universe.

Shawn Weatherly of the U.S. beat out 68 contestants in 1980.

Irene Sáez of Venezuela won the crown 1981. The pageant, held in New York City, returned to the United States for the first time since 1972.

Karen Dianne Baldwin was the first Canadian to win Miss Universe.

Lorraine Downes was the first and, so far, the only New Zealander to be crowned Miss Universe.

Yvonne Ryding was the third Swede to win the title.

Deborah Carthy-Deu was the second Miss Universe winner from Puerto Rico.

Bárbara Palacios of Venezuela was the winner of 35th Miss Universe.

Cecilia Bolocco of Chile won the Miss Universe title in 1987.

Bui Nakhirunkanok of Thailand was the first to win both the Miss Universe and Best National Costume award in a single pageant.

Holland's Angela Visser was crowned Miss Universe in Cancún, Mexico.

Mona Grudt, who declared herself "the beauty queen from hell" was the first and only Miss Norway to be crowned. She hails from Hell, Norway.

Lupita Jones was the first woman to win the crown for Mexico.

19-year-old Michelle McLean was the first and only Namibian to win Miss Universe.

Puerto Rican Dayanara Torres, pictured left, was crowned at age 18. That year's pageant was held in Mexico City, and the crowd booed when the Mexican contestant didn't place.

Sushmita Sen won the title for India for the first time in 1994.

Chelsi Smith was the first American to be crowned since 1980.

Alicia Machado was the fourth Venezuelan to win Miss Universe. She has since spoken out against Donald Trump, who owned the pageant at the time.

Hawaiian-born Brook Lee won the Miss Universe pageant at age 26.

Wendy Fitzwilliam was the second Miss Universe from Trinidad and Tobago and the first to win wearing a bikini in the swimsuit competition.

Botswanan Mpule Kwelagobe was not only the first black African woman to win Miss Universe, but the first to win any international beauty pageant title.

Lara Dutta was the second Indian woman to win Miss Universe.

Denise Quiñones from Puerto Rico won yet another title for the U.S. in 2001.

Oxana Fedorova was the first Russian to win Miss Universe. She was also the first to be dethroned a mere four months later, for reasons that are still unclear.

Amelia Vega, right, was the first delegate from the Dominican Republic to be crowned Miss Universe. At 18, she was also the youngest since 1994.

Australian Jennifer Hawkins won the crown in 2004.

Natalie Glebova was the first Canadian delegate to win the title.

Puerto Rican, Zuleyka Rivera, won title in 2006 over 85 other contestants.

Riyo Mori was the winner of Miss Universe in 2007 and the third Japanese woman to place in the top five.

Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela was crowned in 2008. It was the first time the pageant was broadcast in 1080i high definition.

Stefanía Fernández won the title in 2009 while representing Venezuela, resulting in the first ever back-to-back victory.

Ximena Navarrete was the second Mexican woman to be crowned Miss Universe.

Leila Lopes was the first Angolan to win Miss Universe. That year, there was a record high of 89 contestants.

Olivia Culpo was Miss Rhode Island and then Miss U.S.A. before she was crowned Miss Universe.

Gabriela Isler was the seventh Miss Venezuela to win Miss Universe.

Paulina Vega of Colombia won the crown in 2014, the last year the pageant aired on NBC.
