Miu Miu Challenges the Notion of 'Dressing Your Age' for Fall 2024

Miuccia Prada challenges the notion that people should "dress their age" in Miu Miu's Fall 2024 collection, building out "a vocabulary of clothing, from childhood to adulthood," per the show notes, that you can pick and choose from, depending on where you are, how you feel or what you like.

"[It] draws inspiration from the span and scope of people's lives, its shifting clothing types reflective of the development of character, both personal and universal," the show notes read. "Concurrent gestures express different moments in life — they coexist within single outfits, just as we each hold simultaneous memories of our own experience."

It's an interesting conceit, especially in the context of a fashion show: The industry puts our heads on a swivel to watch clothes walk up and down a runway twice a year, conditioning us to believe we should be shuffling our wardrobes every six months — but Mrs. Prada pumps the breaks on this, or at the very least slows it down, by reminding the audience that these pieces can (and should) stay with you for multiple seasons of your life, not just a calendar year.

This isn't just subtext for the collection. The shrunken fit, cropped sleeves and uniform-like separates in Fall 2024 are meant to evoke what we wore as kids; on the flip side, there are what the brand deems "signifiers of propriety and chic": gloves, brooches, tailored outerwear, LBDs — pieces that our collective imagination understands to be "for grown-ups".

Backstage, she elaborated on this, explaining to press that she wanted to convey how "you can choose different moments in your life and decide to mix them up."

"I say myself: Every single morning, I have to decide if I'm a 15-year-old girl or a lady," she said, reiterating what she told reporters after Prada's Fall 2024 show in Milan. Of course, the Miu Miu woman is all of these things at once: She has a playfulness to her, a youthful energy that never leaves her, a self-assuredness that comes from growing into yourself and an intelligence gleaned from a life well lived. Her clothes should reflect that.

For Fall 2024, they do, through the mixing of "proper with improper, right with wrong" — fabrics and silhouettes that shouldn't go together, put in conversation with one another; wardrobe faux-pas, like wrinkled or creased clothing, reclaimed and worn confidently. (So, if you see me out in a wrinkled dress, I'm just doing as Miuccia says.)

"Clothes can make us both think back, and project forwards," the show notes read.
