Miu Miu, Sambas and 'Renaissance' Dominated Fashion Searches in 2023

From the most memorable fashion shows to the most impactful star-studded front rows to the ever-changing trends fueled by TikTok, Lyst's Year in Fashion — an annual report analyzing the search data of the platform's 200 million users to determine the top brands and products on any given year — is looking back on 2023's major moments, both on and off the runway.

Continuing its reign from last year, Miu Miu was once again named brand of the year by Lyst, largely thanks to its celebrity-helmed campaigns, countless buzzy products (see: the logo cashmere cardigan that instantly became an 'It' item and spawned librarian-core) and collaborations with New Balance and Church's. Searches for the Miuccia Prada-helmed house increased 39% year-on-year.

Miu Miu is also largely responsible for what Lyst identified as the trend that defined 2023: hot pants. Just when we thought the mini skirt couldn't get any more, well, mini (also thanks to Miu Miu), stylish stars and influencers alike turned to super-short shorts to embrace the underwear-as-outerwear trend. We saw them everywhere, from red carpets to runways — but after Emma Corrin strutted Miu Miu's Fall 2023 runway in gold sequin panties, searches for the brand spiked 257% in just 24 hours.

On the footwear front, Lyst named Alaïa's Mesh Ballet Flat as shoe of the year after stars such as Jennifer Lawrence and Sofia Richie sported the sought-after style. (The mesh style also ranked number seven on the Lyst Index's hottest products list in the second quarter.) Though hardly new to the game, the Adidas Samba emerged as 2023's must-have sneaker. (It was searched for every 1.7 minutes on Lyst.) Hailey Bieber, Bella Hadid and Harry Styles love the shoe, which has even been updated through limited-edition collaborations with Sporty & Rich, Pharrell Williams and Wales Bonner. (The Adidas collaboration with Wales Bonner — a ponyskin Samba — saw searches skyrocket 13,227% in November upon its release.)

In a win for budget-friendly fashion, Lyst's bag of the year goes to Uniqlo's shoulder bag, which retails for under $20 — it's the most affordable product to ever be featured on the platform's Year of Fashion list. It's also the brand's best-selling bag of all time, with the genderless and practical style achieving viral TikTok fame.

As for the pop culture moments and stars who dominated the fashion scene in 2023, Beyoncé's record-breaking "Renaissance" tour was the epitome of style, success and silver, according to Lyst, which named it the tour of the year. Queen B had more than 600 looks custom-made for her 56-show tour from the industry's hottest designers, including Mugler, Alexander McQueen, Prada and Brandon Blackwood. The one that captivated concert-goers and fashion lovers the most, though, was a "hands" bodysuit designed by Loewe, which sent searches for the brand skyrocketing 140% on Lyst.

Lyst crowned Blackpink's Jennie as the most powerful dresser this year for the way she influenced fashion searches for brands like Chanel and Calvin Klein through her sartorial choices, ambassadorships and collaborations. (A couple examples: Her capsule for Calvin Klein led to searches for the brand increasing 22% in the following days, while pictures of her wearing the Cecilie Bahnsen x Asics Mary-Jane sneakers in August caused a 27% spike in pageviews for the Scandinavian label over the next 24 hours.)

Kylie Jenner had the biggest impact on the front row, particularly thanks to her appearances at Schiaparelli's Spring 2024 haute couture and ready-to-wear shows. Meanwhile, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, who recently welcomed their second child, were the fashion couple to watch, as their Bottega Veneta looks sparked a 35% rise in demand for the brand since March, per Lyst data. (The brand's Andiamo bag also saw an increase of 263% in searches after Rocky sported a bubblegum pink version.)
