From Town & Country

There is certainly no shortage of Jane Austen adaptations. From the famed 2005 Keira Knightley version of Pride and Prejudice to this year's Emma. (styled with a period), starring Anya Taylor-Joy, the author's work continues to resonate with modern audiences despite its nineteenth century setting. There have also been plenty of successful efforts to update Austen to the present day, not least of which is Clueless, the Amy Heckerling–directed classic which reimagined Emma in 1995 Beverly Hills. Now, The CW is looking to bring all of Austen's novels into 2020 with a new anthology series.

Modern Austen, currently in development, will retell Austen's novels as contemporary stories. Each season will tackle a new novel, beginning with Pride and Prejudice. Here, find everything we know so far about the newest Austen adaptation.

Modern Austen will set Jane Austen's novels in the present day.

The series, which will consist of hour-long episodes, will depict Austen's novels in different modern settings. According to Deadline, the show "reimagines Austen’s beloved novels as six modern stories, offering a kaleidoscopic look at love and family in our time of inequality and disconnection."

Perry Mason writer Eleanor Burgess is set to pen the script. Stephanie Allain's Homegrown Pictures, alongside Warner Brothers TV, will produce the series. Allain is best known for producing the 2020 Academy Awards alongside Lynette Howell Taylor, making history as the first Black woman in the Academy’s 92-year history to do so. She also produced the hit show, Dear White People, along with the films, Beyond the Lights and The Weekend. Homegrown Pictures has been nominated for over 100 awards.

The first season will reimagine Pride and Prejudice set in contemporary San Francisco.

The anthology series will feature a different Austen novel for each season. It was recently announced that the show will start with Pride and Prejudice, which is perhaps the author's most famous work. The novel chronicles the social misadventures of the Bennet family, in particular those of Elizabeth, one of five daughters pressured to marry well in order to preserve the family's reputation and wealth. This time, however, the drama will unfold in modern day San Francisco.
