When Christine Luna noticed her kids were scared of the dark, the mom of four knew she needed to find a solution to calm their fears.

While brainstorming ideas, the Washington State local — who shares four kids ages 9, 8, 4 and 2 ½ with her husband Caesar — remembered she'd seen a video online of someone painting rocks with glow-in-the-dark paint. She recalls thinking how cool it was, and realized that if someone could use the paint on rocks, she could probably use it somehow in her kids' rooms.

After researching, Luna discovered how affordable the glow-in-the-dark paint was. She bought a few cans and shared her plan with her two eldest children, who share bunk beds.

"I bought the paint on a rainy Sunday afternoon and spent some time with each of them individually," Luna tells PEOPLE. "I asked them what would make them feel safe and comfortable in their beds. We decided on simple, familiar shapes like smiley faces, polka dots and zebra stripes — things that would help them relax."

Luna and her kids spent about 30 minutes painting their chosen designs on their beds. The experience was both fun and rewarding, she says. And that night, she noticed an immediate improvement in their sleep.

"They love it," Luna says. "Nightlights can be too bright or not dim enough for older kids, but the glow-in-the-dark paint provides just the right amount of comfort. Since they were involved in the design, it really helped them relax and sleep better."

"My other two kids, they share a bedroom too, but one's in a crib, and so they don't have bunk beds yet," she adds. "And so the for other room I just painted a night sky picture and used the glow-in-the-dark paint to paint on stars and a little glow-in-the-dark owl."

The proud mom shared video of the painting project on her TikTok page, where she posts parenting advice. To her surprise, the video went viral, receiving more than 32 million views and upwards of 3,300 comments.

Many viewers requested a video of the finished product, prompting Luna to buy a black light to showcase the glow-in-the-dark paint better on camera. However, she feels the video still doesn't fully capture the effect.

"I've connected with so many new friends and other moms who are dealing with similar issues," Luna says. "It’s exciting to reach out and provide encouragement and ideas to help with their own situations."

"When you have kids, you'll do anything to help them sleep through the night — even paint a bunk bed with glow-in-the-dark paint," she adds. "I really try to partner with my kids in these sorts of situations and include them in on these conversations."

Since the project, Luna says her kids have become obsessed with the glow-in-the-dark paint.

"They want to paint everything,"says with a laugh. "Sometimes it's like, no, we can’t have the living room ceiling glowing in the dark. But we do a lot of canvas painting and outdoor projects. Since we live in a rural area with plenty of space, we can take the paint outside and have fun. My kids are very creative, and I try to encourage that as much as possible in a clean way."
