Mom collaborates with her toddler to create incredible art

For over a year, Toronto-based artist Ruth Oosterman has been collaborating with her (now 3-year-old) daughter, Eve, to create a series of vivid paintings.

The pair work together – often on multiple canvases at the same time – switching between paint, felt-tipped markers and glued-on jewels and bits of paper. Most of the colour comes from Eve while mom provides the finishing touches including details like facial features.

Though Oosterman has worked as a solo artist for years, she admits that collaborating with her daughter has brought something new to the table.

“When a child paints there is no such thing as a “mistake” and that very reason is what gives them the freedom from the fear that holds back many artists from reaching their full potential,” she says on her website. “Being able to slow down and see the canvas from a child’s perspective has given [me] the priceless ability of seeing life in it’s true, raw form, something we all lose as we age.”
