Trying to stay fit and healthy as a busy mom can be tough. Majella Gorringe is the first to admit that her busy schedule made her guilty of eating way too much fast food, frozen food and pop after she had who two daughters. But after being dragged to a self-help talk with a friend she looked in the mirror and decided it was time for a change.

“At this stage I had a lot of anxiety and I hardly left the house,” she tells Kidspot. “[The talk] was a huge eye opener for me. It gave me courage and it made me feel like I could take control and I could get myself out of this misery.”

Her first step was to drop some weight — at her peak, the 23-year-old weighed 161 lbs. In an effort to be held more accountable for her actions, she started an Instagram account called activemumma, where she planned to chronicle her weight loss journey.

Ten months later, she had already lost 35 lbs.

One of the first steps she took was trying to find a way to incorporate a workout within her busy schedule. That meant planning 45-minute power walks out with the stroller, which would be good for both her and her kids.

“It is tough in the beginning because everything is so new, but you make it apart of your routine,” she says. “Every day after my walk I take my girls to the park so they have something to get excited about and look forward to. I work out for 28 minutes, three times a week, and walk for 45 minutes a day which isn’t that much out of a 24-hour day.”

As she began to gain more stamina, she moved on to workouts by popular fitness guru, Kayla Itsines, and also began focusing on fueling her body better with healthy foods.

“I drink loads of water and I have protein and veggies for each meal. I love, love, love stir-fries and I eat a lot of those without the sauce. Instead I use chicken seasoning and lots of garlic.”

Gorringe hopes her journey will be inspiring for other moms struggling to get back in shape post-baby. Her best advise is to start slow and make small changes.

“Change your diet with small steps, like replacing cheese with cottage cheese and reducing your portion sizes if you need to like me,” she says. “And make water your number one drink choice!”
