Mom Refuses to Pay for Son's 'Selfish' Girlfriend on Family Vacation, Now Both Are 'Furious' with Her
The mother of two shared a lengthy post on Reddit on Tuesday, Dec. 17 to seek advice
A mother is seeking advice after she refused to pay for her son’s girlfriend during a family vacation.
On Tuesday, Dec. 17, the woman shared a lengthy post on Reddit to seek advice, due to her son and his girlfriend being “furious” with her.
“I have two sons (22 & 23). They both have serious girlfriends that they have been dating for over two years. Jordan’s girlfriend is an amazing young lady. She has a great head on shoulders, is sweet, smart, polite, good to my parents, responsible, and balances my son perfectly,” she wrote. “They make a great team."
However, the mom of two claimed that her other son’s girlfriend had opposite characteristics.
“Tyler’s girlfriend is selfish, entitled, manipulative, and dislikes our family,” she said. “She scares me (and the rest of the family and friends) with her behaviors.”

The mother added that her two sons “are in love” and plan to marry the ladies, adding she was “divorced when both boys were in diapers so it has been the three of us for years.”
“We are very close. We have always traveled together,” the Reddit user continued. “Jordan’s girlfriend has been on two trips with us that I paid for. Vegas for Jordan’s 21st and charity boat poker run on Lake Michigan. Both of these involved bars.”

“Tyler’s girlfriend is 20 so she was not invited,” the woman added. “She became angry that she was not invited. We (new husband of two years) own a vacation home on a lake.”
She continued that her husband had planned a guys' trip, causing Tyler’s girlfriend to get angry as she wanted to use the vacation home the same week before returning to college.
“Tyler has now informed me that his girlfriend will be invited on ALL trips and I will be expected to pay for her or he will not come,” the mom wrote. “My husband has said she is not welcome at the vacation house (until she stops acting so entitled).”
This year, the family was planning a vacation to the Bahamas for Christmas. However, after Tyler's ultimatum, the mother chose to cancel the trip, rather than invite the couple. She claims this is in line with "Jordan's request." Instead, she says, she "upgraded my husband and I into first class and a suite.”
"Jordan thought the trip would be miserable with Tyler’s girlfriend,” she added. “He wanted me to enjoy the trip. Tyler and his girlfriend are furious. AITAH for not paying to take my future DIL on vacation?”
Responding in the comment section, many Redittors appeared to take the mother’s side.
One person wrote, “She’s not even family yet, and she’s already acting like this? LOL. You’re not obligated to fund her vacations, especially when she’s being so disrespectful to you and your husband."
"Your house, your rules, your money. Tyler’s gf sounds like a walking red flag," another added.
Others were on the fence, and claimed alienating the couple is not a good longterm solution. "OP has to decide if she wants to be right or if she wants to be happy," wrote one commenter. "If she invites everyone and sets boundaries and doesn’t react, Tyler will see how awful [the girlfriend] is. If they are excluded because [the girlfriend] sucks, he will come to her defense and only see her good qualities."
After reading the mom's account, one user made a request for the other side of the story.
"I don't think it's possible to make a judgment without getting a third party perspective," the commenter wrote. "Let me tell you why. You talk about your son's girlfriend the same way my mom talks about my sister in law. You would think she is the devil herself listening to my mom. Except she's not at all. My mom decided very early she didn't like her so now everything she does is wrong. And not just wrong, but also done intentionally."
