Someone in New Jersey is ordering a lot of green tea ice cream through Instacart, and I want to know who it is. As a Jersey native, I was surprised when Instacart’s map of the most uniquely popular ice cream flavors in the U.S. and Canada indicated that the Garden State joins Alaska, Hawaii, Maine, and our Ontario neighbors to the north in ordering a bunch of green tea ice cream for home delivery.

Like last year, Instacart delved into its purchase data to determine North America's top ice cream flavors and the unique flavors that arrive on our doorsteps. However, unlike last year, when Instacart analyzed grocery orders for an entire year (June 2022 to May 2023), this analysis is for the peak summer months (June to August 2023).

Since National Ice Cream Day (July 21) is fast approaching, this is the perfect time to examine some of that data.

Of course, your top flavor may not be anywhere on either list. The list features flavors from stores where Instacart shoppers can grab ice cream. If your favorite summer ice cream treat is a swirl of chocolate and peanut butter soft serve from Kohr Bros on the Ocean City, New Jersey boardwalk—like mine is—Instacart has no way of tracking that.

It also doesn’t deliver from ice cream shops, so if your favorite ice cream comes from Baskin Robbins, the top ice cream chain in the country, that’s not in the data either. So, take Instacart’s findings as a snapshot of the abundance of ice cream riches we can choose from here in the U.S. and Canada. And take July 21 as an excuse to indulge, no matter how you get your ice cream. It’s time to scream for your favorite ice cream flavor.
