The Most Viral Costco Items Of 2024 So Far (RIP Churro)

Here at Delish, we can’t help but refresh our phones to see what those crazy kids at Costco are up to these days. Especially for a store that sells quite literally everything—from playgrounds to jumbo-sized boxes of milk—Costco always manages to have something exciting (or slightly wild) hidden among their aisles if you look just beyond the free samples.

As it turns out, we’re not alone in our obsession with all things Costco. So many of their newest items this year ended up going viral online, causing many fans to rush to the store to pick up all kinds of new groceries and food court items.

Here’s just a sampling of some of our favorite Costco items that have come out in 2024 so far. Did you happen to try any of these ultra-popular new Costco food releases? Let us know in the comments!

Apocalypse Dinner Kit

We know what you’re thinking and we’re thinking it too. Like a commenter wisely posted on this viral Instagram post about the dinner kit, “Does Costco know something?”

If you consider yourself a “Prepper,” you might want to stay prepared by picking up perhaps the biggest (and most alarming) deal at Costco: their so-called “Apocalypse Dinner Kit.” The ReadyWise Emergency Food Supply Kit contains 132 servings of food and drinks (like pasta alfredo and apple cinnamon cereal), lasts up to 25 years, and costs only $62.99.

Turkey Swiss Sandwich

Costco customers certainly acted as if the apocalypse was happening with this food court release this year: the Turkey Swiss Sandwich. Especially with the loss of the roast beef sandwich, and the obvious fact that the U.S. Costco food courts still do not offer french fries(!), the Turkey Swiss Sandwich has been met with a lukewarm reception so far, with some Costco fans asking the obvious question: Why does this sandwich look circa 1996?

Giant Banana Cream Pie

There’s going bananas and then there’s….going bananas because Costco rolled out this behemoth of a Banana Cream Pie earlier this year. At a whopping 3.5 pounds and only $15.99, this pie features a buttery Graham cracker crust that’s filled with real bananas, banana pudding, whipped topping, that’s then drizzled with caramel (because, of course it is). The jury is still out on how good this colossal pie tastes, but one thing is for sure: You’re going to want to get help finishing off this pie.

Lotte Ice Cream Bars

When something is “big in Japan,” Costco shoppers can’t help but hope that it eventually comes stateside. That’s absolutely the case for these Lotte Ghana Japanese ice cream bars, which became available in Costco earlier this summer (perfect timing). What’s all the hype about? Well, these petite treats are sort of like if a chocolate-dipped ice cream bar was crossed with a cookie ice cream sandwich. So, they’re basically the perfect dessert.

Sushi Counters

You might think that “Costco” and “Sushi Counter” are words that don’t really go together, but you should. In fact, Costco’s starting to roll out more sushi counters across the U.S. this year after testing the concept at their flagship store in Issaquah, Washington, and they are getting rave reviews from customers. If a Costco-sized amount of freshly made nigiri is your idea of heaven (um, same?), keep an eye out to see if a store near you is next to get a counter in-store sometime soon.

Burger Kits

If the apocalypse kit was met with excitement and awe, Costco’s Bacon Cheddar Burger Kit has been met with…suspicion. The kit itself contains everything you need to make a feast of burgers, like pre-cooked beef patties (with bacon pieces, sliced cheddar cheese, red onions, lettuce, sliced tomatoes, and burger sauce. You might think the main concern would be the buns (where are they? Sold separately, of course), but it’s actually the patties. The pre-cooked patties, to many customers, appear pretty dry already and no doubt will get a bit more dry once reheated. On top of those pre-sliced vegetables that’ll need to get used up fast, this might be a convenience that’s gone a bit too far, TBH.

Churro Replacement

One thing that many Costco customers can agree on? Don’t change the major staples at the food court! No, we’re not talking about the famously affordable $1.50 hot dogs, but the recent removal of the beloved churro from the dessert menu. To add insult to injury, the churro has been replaced with a double-chocolate chunk cookie (Not! The! Same!). Why couldn’t the churro and the double-chocolate chunk cookie get along and both stay on the menu? We may never know.
