As any busy parent will testify, anything that saves you a precious few seconds in the mornings can be worth its weight in Nescafe gold. But last week, when mum-of-six (yes six!) Madeleine West revealed her unusual time-saving hack of putting her children to bed in their clothes, it sparked a debate about her alternative parenting style.

Now though, the former Neighbours actress has hit back at her critics and implored social media users to stop criticising and instead support other parents in their choices.

Speaking on Today Extra, the author of Six Under Eight explained that while she was happy her unusual shortcut was “starting a conversation about parenthood” she was concerned that social media was turning into a sort of parenting war-zone instead of offering a platform to share advice and offer support.

“Social media forums for me are sort of like the village that we had in the olden days,” she said.

“It takes a village to bring up a child. People go there for support and advice. And if we’re tearing each other down on social media, then people who really do need help and a shoulder to cry on aren’t going to reach out for fear of being judged. That was my concern,” she continued.

She finished her statement by explaining that though everyone entitled to their opinions on her parenting choices and she isn’t concerned by the criticism she believes that when others see her “dragged down, it doesn’t help the situation.”

And putting her children to bed in their clothes isn’t the only parenting shortcut Madeleine has shared in her book. The busy mum also reveals that she survives motherhood with six children by writing endless to-do lists, photographing her kids favourite lunches in case she isn’t around to make them and multi-tasking by enjoying a glass of wine while in the bath.

Some of her time-saving hacks have drawn criticism, but Madeleine believes that parenting is about using your own instincts and doing what you believe is right for each individual child.
