Since making the switch to natural deodorant a few years ago I’ve gone through a whole roster of different brands, with some being more successful than others. I’ve definitely found a few favourites, but am always on the lookout for more affordable options that perform just as well.

One top-rated deodorant that I've become a fan of is Native, which started out as an online brand with a focus on deodorants for men and women before branching into other personal care items like body wash, soap, and toothpaste. They've long been available to shop online directly through the brand's website, but since they're based in the U.S., it's made for some pricey conversion and shipping fees in the past.

That's part of the reason I was so excited to learn that the brand is now available to shop in Canada. As part of the new Thoughtful Choices at Shoppers Drug Mart lineup, you'll find it along with a huge assortment of cruelty-free, sustainable, and recyclable beauty and personal care products.

The details

All Native products are free of parabens, sulfates and aluminum, making them a great choice for anyone with sensitive skin or if you’re trying to be more conscious of the ingredients that you’re using in your skincare products.

Thanks to a base of coconut oil, tapioca starch and baking soda, Native manages to be hydrating while also absorbent. It’s available in a range of unisex scents that include classics like Cucumber & Mint and Lavender & Rose. While we do only have the core collection of fragrances available to purchase in stores, if you're looking for even more exciting scents you can also check out the Native website for even more seasonal options.

Ringing in at $19 per stick, Native deodorants do cost more than most drugstore competitors, but are still significantly less expensive than many of the natural deodorants on the market.

What shoppers are saying

Backed by literally thousands of five-star reviews (more than 17,000 to be precise), there's no denying that Native's deodorants are a hit among shoppers.

"I have super sensitive skin and I took a leap of faith with this deodorant and I am pleased to say I'm never using anything else. Whether I'm going to the gym or just running errands, I know this will keep me smelling great. Plus, I feeling good knowing the ingredients are good for me," shared one reviewer.

"Love love love Native! I have been wanting to switch to a natural deodorant and was having issues with my skin reacting badly to other brands. Native has been perfect! It does its job, smells amazing, and is gentle on my super sensitive skin," added another.

It's important to note that since they are aluminum-free and not an antiperspirant, you will still sweat while using these deodorants. That said, they do a great job at keeping odours at bay, but you may find that your body needs some time to adjust if you're used to using conventional deodorants.

"I have been using Native for over a year, [and] this is hands down the best deodorant I have tried. It may take a few months for your body to adjust to non-aluminum deo, but trust me stick with it! It will be worth it," noted one reviewer.

Verdict

With a super-creamy texture that applies smoothly to the underarm, I was impressed by Native’s easy application. Compared to other natural deodorants I’ve tried, there was no gritty feel, no overpowering scent, and no yellow stains on my white t-shirts like I’ve experienced before. It also kept me feeling fresh throughout the day, without having to reapply at all.

While I’ve found that it’s a great choice for everyday activities, I did notice that if I worked up a really heavy sweat there was some wetness under my arms when using Native. I may have to stick with my favourite Soapwalla deodorant for more active days, but considering the price and the variation in scents from Native, I’ll definitely still be keeping it around.
